In June of 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act, ruling that the government can’t deny benefits to same-sex couples legally married by the states. The Pew Research Center’s series of reports explores attitudes about sexual orientation and identity. The series is based on several Pew Research surveys – one of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) adults in the U.S.; another of the American public as a whole; and another of publics in 39 countries. It also includes an analysis of media coverage and the social media conversation about the same-sex marriage issue.
