Five years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, a majority of Americans (57%) say that the nation is no better prepared for hurricanes and other natural disasters than it was in 2005. Just 38% say country is now better prepared for natural disasters than it was before Katrina. Majorities of most political and demographic groups agree that the U.S. has not taken steps to prevent another disaster like Katrina. There is no partisan difference. College graduates, however, are split on the question (46% better prepared; 49% not better prepared) while most adults without a college degree (61%) say the nation is no better prepared for a natural disaster.
