In the mainstream press, technology does not receive an abundance of coverage. A study of reporting on media topics from June 2009 to June 2010 found that technology accounted for just 1.6% of the total newshole, ranking it 20 out of 26 identified topics. The coverage technology did receive often feel into two competing storylines: that technology is making life easier and more productive and that the internet is not secure. The danger of text messaging while driving — a story of the perils of technology — was the most-covered tech story during the time studied. In contrast to the coverage of technology in the traditional media, an examination of blogs, social media sites and Twitter posts found much more reporting and talk about exciting technological advancements.
