For Father’s Day, here are six facts about the views and experiences shaping fatherhood in the United States today.
How are U.S. parents raising their children these days, and how does their approach compare with the way their own parents raised them?
One-in-three U.S. adults ages 18 to 34 live in their parents’ home, according to U.S. Census Bureau data from 2021.
When we have the data to study groups of similarly aged people over time, we won’t always default to using the standard generational definitions and labels, like Gen Z, Millennials or Baby Boomers.
Among employed U.S. adults who are ages 25 to 64 and married, husbands spend about 28 hours per week on leisure. Wives spend about 26 hours on it.
Most self-employed workers (62%) say they are extremely or very satisfied with their job, compared with 51% of those who are not self-employed.
Women now make up 35% of workers in the United States’ 10 highest-paying occupations – up from 13% in 1980.
As people are living longer and many young adults struggle to gain financial independence, 23% of U.S. adults are in the “sandwich generation.”
Mental health concerns top the list of worries for parents, followed by concerns about their children being bullied. The vast majority of parents say being a parent is enjoyable and rewarding all or most of the time, but substantial shares also find it tiring and stressful.
