Access to mobile phones and social media is common across emerging economies. People around the world see certain benefits from these technologies, yet there are also concerns about their impact on children.
An estimated two-thirds of tweeted links to popular websites are posted by automated accounts – not human beings.
61% of Facebook users have taken a voluntary break from using the site at one time or another and 27% plan to spend less time on the site this coming year. Even so, two-thirds of online adults are now Facebook users.
Campaign and policy-related material on SNS plays a modest role in influencing most users’ views & political activities. Democrats & liberals are the most likely to say the sites have impact and are important.
66% of social media users have employed the platforms for at least one of eight civic or political activities with social media
18% of users have shunned “friends” who have different ideas and 16% have found friends whose beliefs match their own
85% of the adults who use social media report that people are usually kind on the sites. At the same time, 49% have witnessed mean and offensive behavior and they usually respond by ignoring it.
By every key measurement, college students lead the way in tech and gadget use. But community college students do not use digital tools as much as four-year college students and graduate students.
In a Pew Internet/Elon University survey, internet experts predict that payment with mobile devices will be commonplace by 2020, although a number of potential hurdles and holdouts stand in the way
