Where Christian churches, other religions stand on gay marriage

The Supreme Court ruling earlier this year legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide has continued to raise questions about how the decision will affect religious groups – especially those that remain opposed to allowing gay and lesbian couples to wed. The court’s ruling makes clear that clergy and religious organizations are not obliged to perform same-sex marriages, but some groups have expressed concerns about their tax-exempt status.

Where Major Religions Stand on Same-Sex MarriageMany of the largest U.S. religious institutions have remained firmly against allowing same-sex marriage, including the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Jewish movement and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as the Southern Baptist Convention and other evangelical Protestant denominations. The nation’s largest historically black church, the National Baptist Convention, and its biggest Pentecostal denomination, the Assemblies of God, also prohibit their clergy from marrying same-sex couples.

At the same time, in the past two decades, several other religious groups also have moved to allow same-sex couples to marry within their traditions. This includes the Reform and Conservative Jewish movements, the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ.

And the list is growing: Clergy from the Episcopal Church will be able to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies after the church’s General Convention recently approved a new definition of marriage. Another mainline Protestant denomination, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), voted to formally sanction same-sex marriage earlier this year.

Among the four largest mainline Protestant churches, the same-sex marriage debate has not been simple. The United Methodist Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (not to be confused with the Presbyterian Church in America, which opposes same-sex marriage) and the Episcopal Church have wrestled with the issue for years, often as part of a larger debate on the role of gays and lesbians in the church.

The new definition of marriage for the Episcopal Church, a member of the Anglican Communion, drew “deep concern” from the archbishop of Canterbury, whose Church of England does not sanction same-sex marriage. And the debate within the Presbyterian Church has already led some congregations to break away and join other, more conservative Presbyterian denominations. Both denominations allow clergy to opt out of performing same-sex marriages, while the ELCA allows ministers and their congregations to determine their own policies.

The United Methodist Church does not allow same-sex blessings or marriages. But the United Methodists also have been intensely debating the issue, particularly in the past year or so, after a church court tried, defrocked and eventually reinstated the Rev. Frank Schaefer, a Methodist pastor who had performed a same-sex marriage ceremony for his gay son. Schaefer’s case has split the church, with some clergy flouting the rules and marrying same-sex couples and other, more conservative members threatening to leave if the church does not hold to its current rules prohibiting gay marriage.

Overall, a solid majority of white mainline Protestants (62%) now favor allowing gays and lesbians to wed, with just 33% opposed, according to a 2015 Pew Research Center survey. A similar share (63%) say there is “no conflict” between their religious beliefs and homosexuality.

    We are commanded by our lord Jesus to love and respect all people. I do not ,however,consider a same-sex Union to be a Biblical marriage and I do not see myself changing on that stance. Whatever people do on their own is between them and the Lord. I love all people gay straight or otherwise, and I do not hate anyone for any reason. I have my own beliefs and will not pass judgement on anyone that is the Lord’s job. On the topic of same-sex marriage I think we can just agree to disagree. May the Lord bless you all.

    Don’t let what is written in any books (holy or otherwise) dictate how you treat human beings based on their sexual orientation, race, gender, disability, etc. There is no justification for hatred — religious or non-religious.

    Having grown up an evangelical I associate mostly negative characteristics with Christianity. When i think of Christianity I think mostly of bigotry, self-righteousness, and hatefulness. I know there are “good” Christians out there, but their not the ones making noise.

    I guess its been this way all throughout history. Christians waged war against other religions (crusades). Christians supported slavery. Christians persecuted left-handed people. Christians supported segregation. Christians were against woman’s rights. Is it any surprise they are against LGBT rights?

    They get to define what the Bible means and want to live in a country where you are forced to follow their views. This is why they are constantly fighting political battles in a country with freedom of religion. (which means freedom to disagree with their views).

    I have seen nothing good come out of this whole LGBT issue. I grew up Cathlic and have been i Methodost church for 24 years. I have been in churches where a few LGBT activists have pushed to get there way, even to the point of ruini.g once thriving churches. The LGBT supportets ate no better than those that openly hsrassed and belittled them in drcades past. Why should 2 percent of a denomination be allowed force the other 98 percent, to abandon their theological beliefs. As well as what the Bible teaches us. If yoy do not agree woth the Bible, why bother with church and christian beliefs ? In todays society its all about me and personal happiness. Thank God the early Christians did not think this way, as there would be no Christianity as we know it. I have both family and friends that live a gay lifestyle. They are not judged and do not exoect me or othets to trample on our Christian anf Biblical beliefs. In closing I would not want those who openly day they are adulterers, thiefs, drug user’s, pedophiles, or those who openly hirt othets to male them selves feel better. I eosh we all could just learn to live together as the Bible says we should. Praying for and carong for each other.

      I’ve never bothered to say anything in a so called “Christian” church because quite frankly most churches are filled with people too many people who will turn on you on a dime if they find out you are different. Most of these hateful people make sure sin is defined as anything they might never want to do…

      a) Want a different opposite sex partner? Simply divorce the old one, and give a ring to a new one. Why even the Catholic church is coming around to wanting to allow remarriage.

      b) Want to destroy the product of your heterosexual encounter? Why plenty of churches allow for abortion beyond life-threatening, rape, or severe deformities.

      c) Heterosexuals can have as many partners as they want. When they are ready to put the piety hat on and attend church, they simply have to settle down with one and give her a ring. Where as homosexuals are to choose only celibacy despite the fact that Paul knew that sexual desires were so strong in many that he said for them to get married. (Marriage of course being that option that the piety insists is only for their kind.)

      If you are gay and Christian, and choose not to leave for an accepting denomination, one option is to simply deal with it as one would deal with cafeteria food… Take and pay for what is nutritious and tasty to you. Don’t choose the food that is burnt (over cooked), raw (under cooked), stale, or simply smells bad. There is always a sucker in line that loves to pig out on food that practically stinks. Same goes for churches who have members who thrive on the theology of hate. They’ve already memorized the parts of the Bible that justifies their hate against you, while conveniently ignoring/forgetting those parts of the Bible that might damn some of their own temptations. They are not of the Christian lifestyle anyway, but rather the lifestyle of hatred. So simply turn a blind eye (and a deaf ear) when they go to pontificate while smiling and staying silent to their face.

    It is time that we realize people do not choose to be homosexual and that God made us all and does not make mistakes. I am a married heterosexual Christian and I know many gay Christians in openly gay relationships that are really good good people and work to serve God and others and help make the world a better place for us all. I applaud the Episcopal Church and others for taking a step in the right direction, I believe to Love Thy Neighbor as ones self means we should all have the same civil rights, not letting homosexuals marry only keeps them sinning when they find love and form a loving relationship someone which I believe is something God wants us all to experience. That being said I believe gay or straight going around sleeping with a lot of people outside of marriage or even a serious committed relationship is a sin, but I believe God is Love and God isn’t going to Judge someone for finding Love. It’s time we as Christians stop dividing ourselves from others, we are all sinners, but true love between two adults I can’t accept is a sin, and in the end I really don’t know what God thinks it’s all part of the divine mystery of Christ! But I will not tell someone they are sinning for being in a healthy living relationship with another adult, and I believe we all deserve the same civil rights. I love you all and I love The Lord and I pray we can all come together to respect each other’s beliefs and who we love, God is Love!

    As long as Christians continue to hate on minority groups and discriminate against gay people, they make atheists look like saints. A lot of Christians have a misguided moral compass. They need to start valuing Equality and stop being such bigots. Luckily we have a separation of church and state, so bigoted Christian groups cannot regress society too much.

      Christians don’t hate gay people and gays are not a minority group. They’re sinners. I love every race, am mixed race and date and will marry interracially. God hates homosexuality(not the people but the sin) and finds it detestable so take your questions and arguments to Him not to his people. I assure you it’s a battle you won’t win.

    The fact still remain that most LGBT dont believe in the bible nor support its doctrines on marriage. Even the ones that believe the bible thank God that they are a member of the LGBT MOVEMENT. The transgender group say people demonize them and they use that as a legal plea against the courts. However I am still unclear on one understandinding with the transgender people. The naturalgender selection takes place inside the womb yet they claim that the natural selection process has made a mistake exactly like some one had a hand in their gender selection and whomever or whatever that was made the mistake. It seems to me that they themselves are demonizing the Natural gender selection process. After saying all of this, those that believe in the bible if you cant see that theirs a group of rebellious ANGELS called THE Satans now then quite frankly you just haven’t been paying attention. THEY have released an attack on america like this world ha not seen before and now that they have had a taste of shoving lies and deception along with hypocrisy down normals throat it is certain to become worse

      actually most of christian beliefs stem off of what Jesus teaches. in the bible he never says that being gay is a sin. only once is homosexuality ever mentioned, a girl who has committed this act was forgiven by Jesus in John chapter 8. so next time you want to sit there and say whats in the bible, actually read it first.

      I believe Roman Catholics and Catholics are generally the same and used inter-changeably. Most catholics in the US are Roman Catholics. There are also eastern orthodox catholics.

    at the end of the day god is the one who set the standard for human relationships and marriage.
    and unless I am mistaken the first “marriage” was between a male and female…commonly known as Adam and Eve.
    obviously much has changed since…but does that mean god’s standards have changed with it?
    the only way to find the answer is by examining the bible.
    and since this discussion is based upon same gender marriage within the realm of Christianity,
    the bible must provide an answer.
    the Apostle Paul said “Let marriage be honorable among All.”
    he also wrote that ” all scripture is inspired of god and beneficial for teaching and setting things straight”
    Leviticus 18: 22 says “You must not lie down with a male the same as you lie down with a woman. It is a detestable thing.”
    The Apostle Paul also wrote that “men who lie with men will not inherit god’s kingdom.”
    now does anyone notice the harmony in the above quotes?
    to the clear sighted and to the blind and deaf
    it is for an absolute certainty that same gender relationships is unacceptable to god and he inspired the people who wrote to make that clear to the people of their day and for our day
    hence why Paul said the bible is beneficial for teaching and setting things straight
    meaning that if a person sincerely desires to serve god but happens to be homosexual or lesbian
    and their conscience bothers them and they examine the bible and see the scriptures quoted above that should clear up any doubts about how god views same gender Relationships.
    and it is simply down to us at the end of the day,
    do we want to serve god and receive his approval and blessings?
    if yes then we know we must make some changes.
    now a person may argue that they cannot change the way they feel about someone of the same gender
    and so they should be exempt from showing genuine humility and repentance.
    but does god except such excuses?
    according to the bible the answer is no…because the people of the first century also practiced same gender lifestyles but once they became aware of how god feels about those things they learned to repent and gradually cease practicing things that god views as detestable and sinful.
    god is not unreasonable
    he knows humans are prone to sin
    and so he does not expect a gay person to change overnight…cause that isn’t humanly possible
    especially if a person practiced those things for a long time.
    but he also knows that we can try…and when we try we show god that we understand what repentance means and what the purpose of Christianity is.
    Christianity can rightly be described as a moral and spiritual washing machine
    in the sense of once we start examining the bible
    and we become convinced that it is trustworthy and we recognize that we fall short of god’s high and perfect standards
    we recognize the need to humble ourselves and make any changes in order to bring ourselves up to the standards set by god.
    and so by the time we emerge from the spiritual and moral washing machine we emerge new in a mental sense
    meaning we now understand what repentance means and how it is manifested when it is genuine.
    when it is genuine it becomes unthinkable for the individual to practice what they now know to be sinful in gods eyes.
    and the individuals strive there after on a daily to stick to god’s standards.
    it won’t be easy but once we make the promise to serve god we are obliged to at least try to keep our promise.
    and if that means breaking links with homosexual or lesbian companions then we are are advised to do so
    because again that tells god that we are sincere and want to adhere to his standards.
    and anyone that stands up and says they are christian and yet openly or secretly carrying on a same gender relationship
    is kidding themselves
    because a true christian that has been cleansed and enlightened mentally would not carry on in a same gender relationship because they would and should know god’s standards and requirements if they are a true Christian.
    there is no room or place for lies within the realm of Christianity.
    every single person within that realm must have a basic understanding of Christianity and how true worship and repentance is manifested.
    thieves murderers adulterers idolaters and people who practice same gender lifestyles have no place in Christianity unless they first repent
    then they can fit in and play their part.
    people need to understand what Christianity means.
    a christian is a servant of god and is therefore obliged to take in accurate knowledge of god and there after share in the public ministry
    in which they help sincere people to learn how to serve god etc.
    one cannot go out on the ministry in the name of Christianity (regardless of the denomination they belong to) while secretly or openly practicing same gender lifestyles.
    because that reflects hypocrisy and defiance of god’s standards
    as well as bringing god’s name into disrepute.
    is god too strict?
    if you worked in a bank would you go into work unshaven and dressed in your pajamas and dressing gown and slippers?
    very unlikely and why?
    because you know and respectfully adhere to your employers standards.
    and if you defy his or her standards you risk bringing your employer into disrepute and you would be accountable for your neglect.
    and the ultimate punishment would be the loss of your Job.
    now who among you would be willing to put your job at risk just for the sake of not wanting to shave and put on a suit before you go to work?
    how does that relate to god?
    well think about it…if a person serves god…he can rightly be viewed as an employee of god…and just as in human terms the employee is subject to his or her employer,
    the same applies to god.
    he is the employer of his servants and he like human employers has people who are trained to inform new staff of the standards and what the rewards and punishments are.
    and once we in effect sign on the dotted line and we wish to remain a valued member of staff we will be willing to adhere to god’s standards and try our best to avoid conduct that brings his good clean name into disrepute.
    changing the standards of marriage to suit our own desires is to be disrespectful to god and we are therefore accountable to him for our actions
    even if that day does not come immediately.
    that does not mean god isn’t to be taken seriously…his slowness to call us to account is a reflection of his patience and earnest desire to see us come to our senses and repent and remain in his good books so to speak.
    I cannot make it any clearer…god does not accept homosexual or lesbian Christians because one of the key factors of Christianity is the need for genuine repentance.
    therefore for a gay person who says they are christian while openly or secretly carrying on with a gay lifestyle
    have not repented properly
    because proper repentance means a change from bad to good.
    Christianity serves as a moral and spiritual cleanser and so depending on how unclean we are in terms of lifestyles
    once we enter into a genuine relationship with god
    we must emerge cleansed and enlightened
    that in fact is why the phrase “born again” is often used in the christian context
    because we are born again but only in the sense of our minds and hearts being cleansed and we should emerge with a new fresh and clean and genuine desire to serve god loyally.
    one can not genuinely do that if they continue practicing what they should have learned is detestable in god’s eyes.
    the Christian body of worshipers if full of determined people should be at least 99% clean of what god’s word describes as the “works of the flesh”
    when the body is clean it brings honor and praise to god because it is due to his wisdom that he has managed to take a body of formerly unclean people and turn them into a new body
    clean and worthy of respect.
    but the greater respect and honor must and should go to god because it is due to his love and skill that he has done what humans have often failed to do even when they have had the best intentions.
    and so if one claims to be part of that cleansed body of genuine Christians you should be free of accusation and certainly no trace of fleshy sinful works should be reflected in that body because that would mean not that god has failed…no it means that part of the body of people have failed and they either need to be removed to avoid affecting other clean members
    or they strive hard to bring themselves back up to god’s high standards and retain that praiseworthy honorable status they once had.
    this should serve as much needed food for thought for those who say they are christian and yet are not if they are unclean by works of the flesh and one of those works is the practice of same gender lifestyles.
    those works dishonor the clean body of Christianity.
    and the “cleanness” is not limited to nice suits and dresses
    no rather the “cleanness” comes from the heart which is manifested by learning not to practice dishonorable things.
    that “cleanness” is worth more in god’s eyes than a zillion men and women all dressed in designer suits and shoes but unclean in their hearts.
    so the heart must be clean as well before one can go out into the world in god’s name.
    I cannot make it any clearer.
    If disputes continue thereafter it is only cause of a reluctance to make the needed changes.
    once the changes are made peace should start to grow…because that is another part of the christian body is that when its members strive to adhere to god’s standards they are blessed with peace because there is little cause for complaint if the whole body is walking in unity and loyalty.
    and how can there be peace unity and loyalty if certain members of the body of Christians selfishly want to walk in ways that does not have god’s approval?

    I can appreciate the anger and sheer disgust felt by Christians around the world at the very wrong and controversial laws been passed by the American Supreme Court in favour of homosexual marriages. Everything America is doing now in promoting homosexuality has come as shock to many Christians who thought Obama was going to be a man of faith, someone who would vote against such ungodly laws. Sadly America was deceived, and so we now have a once upon a time Christian country as the very den of vice and every kind of immorality.       because the power of Christianity enlightens people and gives them an incentive to change from good to bad.
      any nation on earth that has been truly enlightened and thereafter cleansed morally and spiritually would not allow their nation and home to be morally polluted.
      people often mistake Christian loyalty for homophobia.
      god isn’t homophobic but is patient and able to cleanse us (if we play our part)
      that then makes people clean and acceptable to god.
      America could be clean in that way but it first needs to recognize the moral pollution it is surrounded by.
      and people need to try to stop viewing christian loyalty as homophobia.
      if a person knows something is wrong and out of place they should be allowed to say so without being made to feel ashamed or frightened especially if what they are saying in the best interests of the people and it will help everyone draw closer to god.

      Sorry to see you’ve bought into anti-equality propaganda. The Supreme Court doesn’t “pass” any laws at all. What they do is compare laws passed by the various governments to the US Constitution (the supreme law of the land–Article VI, Clause 2). If those laws are in violation of the supreme law of the United States, then those laws must be tossed.

      In other words, Kim Davis’ claim that she was following “God’s Law” isn’t justification of any sort. The supreme law of the United States is the Constitution of the United States, not the Holy Bible or what her church tells her is God’s Law.

    Thanks for the article. But the issue of gay marriage legalization by the Supreme Court is very sad. Even nature itself will testify against the great Unuted States of America foe such a decision. I wonder how will those Supreme Court judges feel when their only son or daughter decides to be a gay or lesbian? It is a sad day for America.

      The myth you’ve bought into is a useful one, however. It lets folks justify discrimination against a hated group. But in the end, that’s all it is. A myth.

    at this point I really don’t care anymore. love who you want to but in reality, if we put 10 men and 10 women on an island, after 20 years there will be a whole lot of new generation because they will multiple and have life or create life. but when we put 10 men and another 10 men that love each other after 2o years, what will the population be? I bet you all, zero only because they cant reproduce. it doesn’t matter who you love but same sex marriage doesn’t make sense. God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Paul, or Eve and Marie. so let takes a second and think about this. thanks

So she remarried with minister and congregation in support. And her children only knew that they participated in a holy church sacrament. Blessed by God and church and separate from secular law.

She did NOT however, go through the legal process of a legally endorsed and recognized marriage. In short, she’s married in the Eyes of God, but not in the eyes of the law. Or of the insurance company.

          I kinda have to wonder why she didn’t simply move in with the guy. After all, she isn’t really legally married. See, if she had gotten legally married, she’d have to notify the insurance company and that means she would lose her benefits. But this way she can say she’s “married” without being penalized for it.

          Interesting dilemma. Should she live in sin, or should she lie to the insurance company? Hmmmm. I wonder what God thinks about this?

I know a lot of people are talking about changes in the Church, even catholics. But they don’t realize the Church or even the Pope can’t change Doctrine, because, the teachings on Faith and Morals given by Jesus to the Apostles can’t change. And it’s the responsability of the Magisterium of the Church to preserve the Apostolic Tradition, just as they do with the Bible.

      those things prevent people from inheriting god’s kingdom and so if we want his approval and blessings we have to discard those things and put on the new personality which the Apostle Paul said which through accurate knowledge is being made new according to the image of the One who created it.
      therefore Homosexuality cannot be justified within the realm of Christianity because it is supposed to be a morally cleansed place

      therefore it can be rightly said that there is no such thing as a gay christian.
      even though it is true to say that putting on the new christian personality is a process which can take a long time to become the norm for some people
      depending on the kind of things they practiced before being enlightened about god’s standards.
      this is why the more Civil partnerships and gay acceptance becomes the norm in society
      the more chances it may influence young impressionable people and lead them astray.
      the norm for marriage is between a male and female…and just cause that standard is changing

        It’s a biological error. In purely scientific, biological terms, the purpose of sex is to reproduce. This is why only about 3.8% of the population is gay. The other 96.2% are sexually attracted to the opposite sex, which encourages reproduction. Nature and genetics do weird things. Just because it happens does not mean it’s SUPPOSED to happen. Marriage was a social contract initiated by cultures the world over to provide protections for the woman and child in exchange for sexual access for the man. IT provided social stability by creating a family unit focused on raising the next generation. This is across many different societies the world over, regardless of religion. I do not doubt the sincerity of affection gay people have for one another, but scientifically it is an error. Because their union cannot naturally produce offspring their argument for entering into a marriage is also weak no matter what their misprogrammed instincts tell them. Study science and sociology – the answers are found there, rather than blaming any religions that merely absorbed those teachings into theirs.

    For a “Protestant” so say “there is no conflict” is to say that they are not actually “Protestant” by definition. The Bible is God’s guide for all Christians to follow and to be a true Christian there is not the option to pick what you want to believe in and ignore what is inconvenient for you. If you are stopped for speeding because that law is inconvenient for you and you choose not to believe in it, you will still receive a ticket for breaking that law. Break the law enough and you will be removed from the population that follows the law until you can convince the authorities that you will abide by the law. The law still exists whether or not you believe in that law and you must abide by it. In the case of religion, or God’s law, man has no authority to change it or ignore it to make allowance for his desires and then assume that God is somehow OK with it. Where does man get the idea that he is advancing and therefore requires less of God’s law? In my view it looks like man is declining, destroying everything in his path for power and money while ignoring more and more of God’s law. It appears that the only fact here is that there is a very large number included in your research who are not what they say they are which means that the conclusion is not a fact and is inaccurate and misleading. Saying that you are a Protestant does not make you a Protestant. What you are is what you do and what a Christian does is follow God’s law never assuming that God made a mistake or that we are so ‘advanced’ now that certain laws of our choosing are no longer valid. So then what is the point of this article if the conclusion is useless? Apparently to mislead. For what purpose?

    Let the same sex form their own organization and call it church and

    And let them who are not ok with the churches move from it and form
    their own church and call it any name .and let their communities live
    from there this is how the whole denominations came about.
    I cannot stay at the Catholic Church if I do not like the way they worship .
    Let them get their own pastors and membership and run their own
    churches, and leave the churches of Jesus Christ alone.

      Leo, being Catholic is not easy. But if you agree with gay marriage, that’s no problem. There are lots of other denominations that approve it. If you want divorce , no problem at all, there are many other denominations that approve divorce. If you agree with abortion. Again, that wouldn’t be a problem. You will find denominations that approve them. Don’t believe in Contraceptives? Again, you will find thousands of thousands of denominations that approve them. As you may know there are thousands of churches that will fulfill all your earthly wishes. You only have to choose one and if you don’t like it just go to another one, and another one, until you are happy.

      You do know eating shellfish is an abomination? As are many other things in Leviticus, which most Christians absolutely deny they have to follow any longer, but somehow gays do have to follow Leviticus. Also virtually every chapter and verse that denounces homosexuality denounces adultery, fornication, and divorce, but NONE OF YOU care about those equally bad sins. You continue to allow divorced people to remarry despite Jesus specifically stating it is adultery. You don’t get upset and condemn women who have children out of wedlock (Bristol Palin for example whom YOU DEFEND at every opportunity). IF you would consistently apply your sexual taboos you MIGHT have a modicum of credibility but the fact you unequally apply your rules (Same chapter same verses) shows this is NOT BOUT YOUR RELIGION BUT YOUR BIASES

All sin is sin. There is no sin bigger than any other sin. It’s all sin.

    Not since the civil rights movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and before that the American Revolution 1775-76, has there been such a determination to correct a wrong. The U.S. Supreme Court in its recent decision redefining “marriage” will test the will of the people to do just that. As far back as the beginning of time marriage has been between a man and a woman (cf. Genesis 2:21-24). But perhaps the court’s ruling did not necessarily redefined marriage. In the narrow 5-4 vote Justice Kennedy wrote: “The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry.” Can that be interpreted as “marry” in the verb sense, and not having to call it a “marriage” in the noun sense? Saying, for example, married into “civil union” would not necessarily redefine marriage. Might the will of the people want to get behind and reinforce that thought? After all, it is very possible these past months leading up to the court decision the LGBT community may have moved too quickly, forcing too much onto the rest of us, to be able to maintain their position as they see it today.

      It took from 1866 to the 1960’s for the Civil Rights movement to truly begin. Nearly 100 years after Emancipation and views of Blacks had not changed much at all. Today, nearly what 5 decades after segregation was outlawed and the entire nation is still divided into black, white, Latino, Asian, American Indian , etc neighborhoods, and communities, and Americans are to believe that most of us accept gay “marriage?”
      Within the last 10 years, millions voted against it for their state. Gay marriage only got through the judges by one vote. People have not changed. Not all all. Especially as quickly as it is being told.

          Christianity can appear to be like secular humanism, such as when we help the poor. But it is not, it has specific rules for Christians to become of the spirit. I think this is how your getting confused.

          You are also confused on what love is. You can say no to someone, punish them, and still love them. Enabling sin by saying yes to someone is not love.

        Act 10:14, in a vision God gave clarity about eating “unclean” things, scriptures are clear that jewelry are not to be THE source of beauty the Bible does not ban it, women are not to over rule or speak above or have authority over men but they are allowed to teach as seen in the example of Pricilla and Pheobe in Acts 18 and Romans as well as Judge Deborah in the Old Testament.
        Fornication is wrong, that’s clear.
        God hates divorce, Jesus is God so the biblical stance on that is clear.
        We should not overeat, again clear.
        Sanctity and rest on the Sabbath is also clear.
        The Bible is the inerrant infallible Word of God. To those who KNOW it, live their lives trying to live it perfected.

        Apparently personal beliefs have everything to do with legislation. The votes of millions and 36 states were over ruled because of a groups personal beliefs. No elected officials passed this upon the entire nation. No part of the constitution was cited. It only passed by one vote.
        The gays suing these Christian businesses are going to bring this issue right back to the court. It will have to be decided if gay “marriage” can eliminate religious freedom in speech AND EXERCISE because it those entities ARE actually worded in the Constitution. Or can gay marriage eliminate those freedoms since there is no word or descriptions concerning the “right” to marriage of any kind in the constitution. Religious Freedom can not exist with gay marriage. This will have to be dealt with as we plainly see by gay lawsuits against Christians.

    Any church that accepts same-sex marriage, should remove any and all Bibles from their church pews, libraries and desks. The reason is why have the Bibles if they are not going to teach and follow the truths that the Bible states. There are more than 40 scriptures in the Old and New Testament that basically say: a man should NOT lay with a man & a woman should NOT lay with a woman. With those scriptures, you can’t say that God accepts homosexuality. God does not accept homosexuality, adultery, fornication (sex outside of marriage), etc. Those churches that accept same-sex marriage can send ALL of their Bibles to me. I will get them into the hands of Bible-believing children of God.

    I’m a Hindu. Personally, I’m very strongly in favour of same-sex marriages for people who want to enter into them.

    But there is wide variation in views among Hindus, with most converts and Hindu members of the Indian/Nepalese/Malaysian/Sri Lankan/etc diasporas in favour, and much of the Hindu population of India against. But it’s moving in what I consider the right direction, of equality.

    That’s the dharmic way, I feel.

    1- on a lighthearted note – I imagine most Buddhists & Hindus seem to you to be ‘without clear position’ on the topic of same sex marriage, simply because we don’t tend to regard gender quite as inherently as you might!
    2 – poor figure analysis – you have presented a figure for which you offer incomplete explanation. What is the purpose of column 3? You do not reference it or speak to its relevance in your commentary. Was it added merely because you wanted to be ‘representative’. The traditions of Buddhism and Hinduism are not your arm candy!
    3 – you really should know better than this – marriage is not considered a religious rite within Buddhism. It is a secular act, supported to differing degrees within various Buddhists traditions (I cannot speak to Hinduism). Consequently, one could state that Buddhists are ‘without clear position’ on the matter of marriage de facto, because this view exists irrespective of the gender identification of those involved!

    I’m afraid, given your vast experience in religious commentary, that I hold you to higher standards than others. As such, I’m extremely disappointed with your work on this figure. It is divisive, misleading and extremely poor commentary upon a situation that is already a root of heartbreak for many religious communities. Please do better next time. Please don’t be so lazy!

    I would check your facts on the American Baptist Churches USA prohibiting same sex marriage. An article in the Conservative Post quotes Pew Research as stating that the ABCUSA sanctions same sex marriage. Since our denomination views the local church as completely autonomous, I would be surprised if any statement expressly prohibiting same sex marriage had been issued for the headquarters in Valley Forge.

        Marriage, as we know it today, began as a legal action by ancient Rome at the sacking of the Sabines. It was created so that the Romans would gain possession of land owned by Sabine women. All male Sabines were killed, the women were contracted into marriage by a court (same as it is done now; a contract between ppl and the court), and the Roman males were given the land by Rome. There was no word in any language of ancient Middle East for homosexuality; same gender commitments were merely part of the norm. Discrimination against same gender couples did not begin until the teachings of Saul of Tarsus began to control Xianity. The passage in Leviticus which is used to support bigotry of same gender relations has to do with temple prostitution in pagan temple. It has nothing to do with same gender relationship in general. My advice: if you choose to not have a relationship with someone of the same gender, don’t. You keep your nose out of my bedroom and I’ll keep my vagina out of your church. Deal?

God is just and God is love….God’s desire is not that Gay people get married or even sleep together…God’s desire is for people to find their true selves. If you go against nature, or God’s plan for mankind, the universe will not support you. I am a follower of Christ and the Second Advent of Christ. When Christ comes back…he will tell you plainly of the Father, no longer in parables and symbols. The day will come when every knee will bow down. That day is at hand even now.       I do not condemn homosexual individuals and believe they deserve the same rights as everyone else, but same sex marriage is not condoned by the Bible and should not be part of any Christian denomination. If city and state judges want to marry same sex couples that is the law, but just because something is legal does not make it correct in the eyes of God.

      To me it is like transgender, God did not make a mistake when we were born male or female. No matter how many body parts you add or subtract, your gender, in God’s eyes, is still the same. You just can’t think you are a female when you have male parts. No one is misassigned at birth.

      The Bible speaks about the acts of homosexuality as something not to do in the OT and as a curse in Romans in the NT. While everyone is a sinner, suffering/struggling against some sin, a homosexual who does not participate in the act of having sex with the same sex person is not guilty of committing a homosexual act. Just like a Christian who struggles with something is not guilty of that unless they see it through into a deed.

    I came across your website reaching out to others, if you read Galatians 5:16-18 you will see the lust of the flesh being dealt with as well as Godliness and moral purity. With only this scripture and I have many how can people get on the gay’s case instead of seeing their own and praying for their enemies (the gay’s)? It all comes down to idolatry and it is more important to have that lifestyle pampers us the God who dose not Change in Hebrews13:8.

    Just thinking out loud…..

    A few days ago I read an article in the Washington post, the headline read:
    “Presbyterian Church (USA) changes its constitution to include gay marriage”

    I was thinking, what if there was a person who was a homosexual. I can only imagine the weight of their sin upon them. Is it possible that there have been many times when that person thought or even felt that what they were doing was not only “un-natural” but it is also wrong. Undoubtedly they would feel some type of conviction every time they went into a church.

    I am sure that many times they felt as though they needed to be in church. That is answer to the “God Spot” in each of us. And then when they went to church, though they would feel good about seeing and hearing about others testifying how their relationship with God had made such an impact on their lives. Maybe they would think “that is great for them, but could never happen to me, because I am a homosexual.”

    Now they have good news! The Presbyterian Church USA has changed their constitution that now basically says, “It’s Okay NOW.”

    SO, how do we deal with sin…..Over the years I have preached and still believe, that as the old hymn says: “What can wash away my sin, nothing but the blood of Jesus.” But hey now, why go through all the struggle for redemption and blood, when we can just change the law! We don’t have to repent, we can just legislate.

    So, if you legislate, you no longer need to repent. So the big question is, if it is no longer sin, then you don’t need a savior.

    My last point of my rambling…. that is really what THIS is all about. Remove God from the situation, then nothing is wrong. Just eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die.

      I.believe this is Grossly negligent to God. Welcome Gods house, but do not corrupt his word. Do not revel in sin. To literally celebrate and be joyfully encouraging in sin is something I dont understand. We serve God first . Not man.

    If you kill a lobster it will release toxins but if you cook it slowly it looses its protective shield and it is no longer a harm to your body.
    That is how devil works. If you would propose this idea years back it would be destroyed right away nobody would even take this under the consideration. Devil was preparing us for years to gay marriage than allowing to adopt kids …to do whatever makes you happy because we live once no rules no consequences and now to finish his masterpiece to destroy church . Church is open for everybody rich or poor gay or straight we are all Gods children but God also gives us choices . If you chose to live in a sin it is your choice that nobody can’t take away from you but please don’t force your sin on us Catholics don’t try to change rules because you don’t like it . If you don’t agree with Catholic church than just simply stay away. Allowing gay marriage in church fights with everything that the church stands for . It would simply destroy Catholic religion and it would be beginning of the end.

      I sincerely doubt you avoid that particular sin.
      After a few thousand years of showing that stoning someone in the middle of town to death and rape essentially being an acceptable thing, why do you think that equal marriage rights are the one thing to push Christianity and Catholicism over the edge? Both churches have survived so much criticism over the past couple of thousands of years, so how is it that equal marriage rights will “simply destroy Catholic religion and it would be the beginning of the end.”?
      Don’t be so ignorant and get your facts straight.

          You’re aware that the US is late to the game on this, right? We’ve seen a lot, actually. Equal marriage has been the law in Canada for over a decade now. I know you’re not paying attention to Canada, but society there has not collapsed, and the churches are doing fine.

          But maybe it’s time to take away those tax exemptions anyway. I’m sure the churches would be happy to pay their share towards the common good.

    Why should anyone care about gay people marrying? Even if a religion doesn’t condone it, they’re not hurting anyone. And if they’re not a member of that particular church, why feel the need to force rules on them?

    It’s obvious from the comments here that Pew is confused. In an attempt to make things clearer, I will add a tidbit about Friends. There are different groups that call themselves Friends. Some, I’m sure, sanction gay marriage. But, not all. Our denomination, the Evangelical Friends Church-Eastern Region and our affiliated groups worldwide are very conservative on this issue, and should be in your third column. We hold a much higher respect for scripture than do the Friends meetings of the Friends General Conference. There are other groups of Friends that fall between these ends of the spectrum.

    Everyone is talking about what basically feels good to them!
    What do we say to innocent children who don’t have a say and are led to believe that their two mothers or fathers are the norm? Who is going to pay for their psychological treatments ? Last I heard it takes a man with physical male parts and a woman with female parts to create a child! What are the explanations of the facts of life and how are they presented in PE or to 3rd graders who are completely innocent?
    So are we a community of .. If it feels good it?
    I don’t know what to say!

    Only a sinner who has turned from his sin and put his faith in Christ is a member of the body of Christ (the church). “For by one Spirit (Holy Spirit) are we all (those who are saved) baptized into one body (the Church)….. Those professing Christ are the ones saved. Those who profess sin are not. We are either in Christ having turned from our sin or we are not in Christ and are lost. Whether we join a certain denomination or religious organization is not a reliable indicator of who is in Christ and who is not. By your fruits you will know them. And professing that homosexuality is not a sin and is acceptable to God is contrary to the word of God. I suggest all sinners turn from their sin and put their faith in Christ.

      Actually, the word of God is in the Ten Commandments. Does it say anything regarding homosexuality in those? I don’t think so. Therefore, you’re wrong, and same sex marriage is not contrary to the word of God.

        You obviously do not know your bible very well. The bible says that the bible itself is the Word of God and in Leviticus it clearly states that homosexuality is detestable. God is eternal, the bible also says that so logically speaking, what God said back then, he still thinks today.

        the New Testament says at the end of the book of Revelation that outside heaven are the immoral, liars, the effeminate, etc. I dont think id want to be outside heaven at the judgement. The Bible very clearly spells out whats wrong with homosexuality. People want u not to look at the Bible but listen to their interpretation of it. The Bible is not of any private interpretation it says. So what you read, you can believe on.

        Zach, there are many commands given throughout the Bible. Please take the time to read the entire Bible so that you are familiar with what it says. There are many commands regarding homosexuality throughout the Bible. Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, 1 Corinthians 6:17-20, etc. are only few examples of this.

    I find it interesting that you choose not to recognize that the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest of all Protestant Denominations does not in any way bless or recognize Gay marriage or gay ministers. Those churches that have embraced homosexuality in marriage or ministry have been disassociated with the rest of the convention. This is by a large margin the majority of Protestants.

    And just so I am absolutely crystal clear, I think incest is sick, wrong, and disgusting, even though the Bible condones it. In fact, one of the sons Lot had with is daughters, Moab, gave rise to the Moabites, of which Ruth was a descendant, and King David was a descendant of Ruth, and Jesus was a descendant of King David, so… Yeah, I’d say that’s a pretty convincing stamp of approval on the part of the Bible.

      The Bible does not condone incest. Yes, there are accounts of incest along with many other deplorable things, but that doesn’t equate to the action being condoned. It equates to the action being recorded. History recorded the atrocities of Adolph Hitler, but I don’t any historian who condones his evil activities.

    Its interesting that Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism are all lumped into a single box as if they have no denominations with different views within this presentation.
    If Christianity was treated in the same way within this infographic, it would go into the category of “no clear position”
    Speaking as a Buddhist studies doctoral student, I can say there are many Buddhist groups which overtly approve of and conduct same-sex marriage ceremonies. There are also groups which will not hold such ceremonies … and there are Buddhist groups who do not hold weddings at all, considering it simply a legal bond outside of the religious sphere.
    Like Christianity, as a whole tradition, Buddhism does not have a consistent standpoint. However, if the graph broke Buddhist schools down into individual traditions like it did for Judaism and Christianity, they could fit more easily into specific opinions.

      You are wrong. There are different sects of Islam I know from personal experience. I cannot comment on Buddhism but I am sure there must be variations because of human beings having diverse attitudes and practices. People find fault with Christianity. This I would not worry too much about because Jesus has already differentiated what is right and wrong. The people of His day bought and sold in the temple but he overturned tables and threw out money changers. You cannot cling to what people do or desire.

      I am a Hindu and, just to clarify, I believe that they perhaps did not split up Hinduism and Buddhism into sects in the chart due to the fact that while sects exist in both religions, each sect itself has an “unclear position”. This is because both religions are largely individualistic and interpretive— religious congregations don’t shape the common view on homosexuality, people themselves do. In other words, members of a similar sect may have varying opinions on homosexuality, because they may have interpreted the scriptures differently. At least this is true for Hinduism… I cannot say much on Buddhism, as you are a student of the religion, and Islam. Interesting observation, however.

    The Bible doesn’t speak of homosexuality very often; but when it does, it condemns it as sin. Let’s take a look.

    Lev. 18:22, “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.”1
    Lev. 20:13, “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them.”
    1 Cor. 6:9-10, “Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”
    Rom. 1:26-28, “For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. 28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper.”
    Homosexuality is clearly condemned in the Bible. It undermines God’s created order where He made Adam and Eve, a man and a woman, to carry out his command to fill and subdue the earth (Gen. 1:28). Homosexuality cannot carry out that mandate. In addition, it undermines the basic family unit of husband and wife which is the God-ordained means of procreation. And, believe it or not, it is also dangerous to society. (See, Is homosexuality dangerous?)

    Unlike other sins, homosexuality has a heavy judgment administered by God Himself upon those who commit it and support it. This judgment is that those who practice it are given over to their passions and believe its lie, which means that their hearts are allowed to be hardened by their sins.

    “For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error,” (Romans 1:26-27).

    As a result, they can no longer see the error of what they are doing, will not seek forgiveness, and will not repent. They will die in their sins and face God’s righteous condemnation.

    But their rebellion against God does not stop there. Those thus judged also promote it and condemn others who don’t approve of their behavior.

    “…and, although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them,” (Rom. 1:32).

    So, in their “hearty approval” of homosexuality, they encourage others to accept their practice; and thus their sin spreads. In this, they will reject the ways of God and stand in opposition to Christ’s redemptive work on the cross. Without Jesus, they will have no forgiveness. Without forgiveness, they will have no salvation. Without salvation, there is only damnation in eternal Hell. We don’t want this for anyone.

    Is this politically correct?
    No, the Bible’s view of homosexuality is not politically correct. Society says that there is nothing wrong with two people “just loving each other.” They ask who are we Christians to judge them? But, we ask who are they to say what is morally right and wrong? Do they have an objective standard of morals that all people should follow? No, they don’t. They appeal to things like “society” and “common sense” and “basic rights,” to promote their opinion of homosexual normality. The problem is that societies have been wrong before (Nazi Germany, anyone?). What is common sense to one person isn’t necessarily common sense to another. And, basic rights? Well, we all have basic rights. But, the homosexuals want special rights. They want laws passed to protect their sexual behavior. They also want to redefine marriage and have everyone else to accept it.

    Will the redefinition stop with homosexual marriage? Don’t bet on it. Pedophiles are now asking for rights, too, and they are using the same arguments initially presented by the homosexual movement decades ago2).

    Think about it. The pro-homosexuals want laws passed to protect a behavior. It is, after all, homoSEXuality. I want to know what right do the politically correct, pro-homosexual minority have to impose their values on the majority? What right do they have to condemn Christians, call us names (homophobes, bigots, etc), and be so very intolerant when we say their behavior is a sinful? They don’t have sound arguments. But they do have emotional ones fueled by liberal dogmatism. They are successfully getting homosexuality promoted in schools, TV, and movies as “normal” and healthy. Healthy? Check out the health statistics of homosexual behavior. As a result, their confidence and successes have pumped up their bravado so much that they even oppress those who oppose homosexuality, a fact blatently ignored by the double-standard-liberal-media. But what are we to expect when dogmatism is king and all opposing views are condemned? The pro-homosexuals want everyone to think like them and approve of their “inborn sexual orientation”; and if you don’t, well, then you’re labeled a bigot–and worse! What they want is for everyone to think that homosexuality is normal. After all, it exists in the animal world, doesn’t it? Yes, it does, and so does eating their young and canibilism. Just because animals do it, doesn’t make it morally right.

    But, believe it or not. We, Christians, aren’t judging homosexuals. We are informing them. God has declared that homosexuality is a sin. It isn’t our preferences we’re declaring. It is God’s. I know. I know. Some will say the Bible isn’t true, that it is archaic, sexist, homophobic, etc. I’ve heard it all before. Kill the messenger and let’s all jump into bed together and have our fun. Sorry, I’m not interested in freedom without responsibility and the resulting promiscuity and diseases and oppression that accompany the politically correct, sexually promiscuity of liberal morality. Instead, I’ll follow my Lord who calls all to repentance (Acts 17:30), myself included.

    Homosexuality is a sexual orientation
    Homosexuals will say that they are born the way they are, that it is a genetic orientation, and since they didn’t choose it, it cannot be wrong. If that is the case, then why do identical twins, with identical genetics, not have uniformity of sexual orientation? This proves it is not genetic.3 But let’s not stop there. What if I am born with a genetic orientation to dislike homosexuality? Is that okay? If it is not, then why the double standard? Would it then be okay for me to want laws passed to protect my “homosexuality aversion orientation”? Or, is only their orientation worthy of protection?

    Just being born with an orientation doesn’t mean it is okay. If I am born with the orientation to lie, does it mean lying is okay? Of course not. Should I demand national rights granted to me because of my lying orientation and its resulting practice? Again, of course not…

      Stop quoting Leviticus, you follow No OTHER verse in Leviticus and over and over again insist that it is not part of the covenant that Christians have to follow. Did you bother to read 1 Cor. 6:9-10 which lumps adulterers, fornicators equally with homosexuals? IF so why don’t you go just as hard on adulterers (which includes virtually anyone who is divorced), people who have sex outside marriage (Bristol Palin comes to mind), etc.? Why? Because you might have to lump yourself or your family members in that and you don’t like that idea one bit.

    PewResearch apparently did not do a thorough research! American Baptist Churches-USA do not prohibit same-sex marriage. Their is no hierarchy in the ABC-USA. Every individual church congregation has the freedom to set in their own body policies and those policies do not reflect on other ABC-USA churches. There are ABC-USA churches right here in Massachusetts as well as other states in New England that are Welcoming and Affirming, performing same-sex marriages, and there are also ABC-USA churches who just have no policies in this matter.

    Buddhism exalts celibacy as the ideal and portrays infidelity within heterosexual marriage as wrong. Hinduism exalts both celibacy and heterosexual marriage and portrays infidelity as wrong. Some modern yogis and lamas may bless a lifelong same-sex union, but that rests mainly on silence and the lack of centralized authority in Eastern religions generally.

      I sincerely ask that at least one among the many apparent Biblical literalists posting here explain why the Bible apparently condones incest (i.e., Lot and his daughters) but does not condone homosexuality. If the story of Lot and his daughters is open to interpretation and/or contextual reading, then why are the other parts of the Bible cited here to justify hatred of homosexuality not open to interpretation? Please explain.

      By the “Word” you mean the bible? If so, then you might want to be informed of the fact it isn’t one “word” but many words given by God and revealed to man over a long period of time. The “clear words” you read… Are actually translations of translations of real events and metaphorical cultural allusions deeply embued with meanings not fully understood and feebly wielded by those who claim to know something. A simple point, walk to the bible/ religious section of your local bookstore. Notice different translations. Done(?…that’s up to you).

    What the study understates–in fact all but ignores–is the diminishing numbers, role and influence of the older “mainline” denominations vs. Catholics, Orthodox, and evangelical groups that include emerging Presbyterian, Anglican, and other newer groups. Every “mainline” denomination listed has experienced a steep decline in members over 40 years and have aging, overwhelmingly white memberships today More conservative denominations and groups across ethnic lines have either grown much more or held steady during the same period.

    Homosexual marriage is not the driving force behind this shift–a trend for four decades. Broader theological differences are at play. A new alignment toward unity is paradoxically occurring among Evangelicals, Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and newer Presbyterian and Anglican groups. Theologically liberal groups–the older “main-line” groups are being left out of the emerging ecumenical movement world-wide.

    Even IF homosexual marriages were sanctioned in some of the more conservative/orthodox churches, the overall theological divisions are deep and would remain. Church renewal us not happening in the theologically liberal main-line groups.

    That us the story being missed in these discussions.

    The Presbyterian Church in America or PCA broke away from the PCUSA years ago because of he liberal views of the PCUSA. PCA is very orthodox (biblical) in its views and marries only male and females and Christians.

      Another item not being stated, is that divorce was not allowed in the original church, from the first century through today. Calvin was the first person to pass this off as legitimate theology (which Luther didn’t support his view either, much less any major theologian through the first 15 centuries). Remember, Matt. 19, where the penalty for adultery was death, NEVER divorce, which is what Calvin tried to pass off as a legitimate option (there is much, much more that with Biblical finality opposes calvin as well, and clearly so). Never in Jewish history, from Abraham to the Diaspora was this true, or even debated as an option.
      Net effect?
      The “church” (thru Calvin) has encouraged 5 centuries of adultery in the “church”, based on the ignorance of the people, and the blind assumption that Calvin was educated about church history, it’s historical theology (Orthodox have NEVER sanctioned this, right to the current date. Never. Marriage is HIS ‘Mystery’, and HIS SACRAMENT, NOT a ‘contract’ between the husband and wife. The marriage is wholly OWNED by by God, not the spouses, through a ‘contract’. It is a profound and wholesale ignorance of His clear sanctions against divorce. “NO MAN may tear apart WHAT GOD HAS BOUND”- clearly an ownership issue. Whatever lack of quality/sin may exist in a marriage (Paul-“you WILL have trouble”, has no exceptional qualifying sin, it refers to any sin common to man) does not, clearly, refer a contradiction to HIS POSSESSIVE STATEMENT. There is a vast amount of additional biblical info, as well as the historical supportive understanding, AND Consequent Conduct, that is supportive of this presentation.
      Why explain this here, in a discussion that is vectored towards homosexuality?

      It’s because the value of marriage was denigrated by Calvin (Look into what his Personal agenda was, in his family), and consequently most of protestantism, by reconfiguring it as a contract, instead of a “Mystery” (why (?) that usage by Paul, etc., if it had such a common understanding, e.g.- a “contract”), & designated so by Christ.
      With marriage misunderstood by Protestants, with resulting excuses for ignoring the “Mystery” and consequent fidelity to Christ’s clearly stated demands by through Matthew, Paul, etc.; IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT THE CHURCH HAS DECIDED TO INCLUDE A DISCUSSION OF HOMOSEXUALITY AS A VIABLE DISCUSSION, BIBLICALLY, AS VIABLE IN ANY CONTEXT, INCLUDING MARRIAGE. IT ALL STARTED WITH Calvin’s deciding to reconfigure scripture. He “did what was right, in his Own Mind”. The Catholic ‘church’ was deviant, Not most of the believers in the original and current church- Orthodoxy. The theology has not changed in 2000 yrs. Calvin NEVER submitted himself to the leadership, nor communicated with the Church to educate himself. NO 1 Man has Authority to come up with new understanding of scripture.
      It’s the sign of an apostate.
      Know that your marriages are Not your own, but His sole possession.
      If you are interested in the additional historical info, and Biblical ‘precept on precept’ historical understanding. I can present this.
      No Matter what, stay married. ONLY if an unbeliever leaves, may you leave the marriage (Paul). Abuse (1 Peter 3:~20) and adultery (Matt.19) were, and still are not excuses for divorce in HIS church.

    I want to know what the difference is in the sin of homosexuality and the sin of divorce or the sin of adultery or the sin of judgement? Sin is sin is sin. God did not condone divorce and look at the staggering numbers of divorces. It says that when you do divorce (properly) that you should not remarry because that is being and adulterer. If we are to call one thing a sin then lets go back to scripture and call everything that is sin a sin and throw everyone who has sinned out of the church!

      Indeed! As a theological conservative I nevertheless think homosexual sex has been overplayed in terms of the silence of the church on other issues of sexuality behavior–especially de-emphasis on marriage and silence on adultery. Yet the fact that we all sin and are imperfect does not mean the church should sanction behaviors that are wrong. There is grace in our sins, but the church has no ceremonies “celebrating” divorce, adultery, or co-chair aging outside imperfect marriage. Homosexual marriage dies just that.

      Sincerely, I think you have missed the point. I’m divorced (although I did not pull the trigger) and remarried (47 years ago), but I confessed my sin, asked forgiveness and firmly believe that I’m okay. Confession is the name of the game. If a sinner, adulter or gay) confesses, I believe he or she is safe.

      I am a baptist and we do not throw people out of the church because they sin. If we did, we would have no members. We do refuse to condone sin as a way of life, especially in our ministers and leaders. As accused, we do condem some sins more than we do other sins. Most people tend to condem sins of others and overlook their own sins. Baptist are not exempt from doing this. Our condemning or failing to condem an action does alter whether or not it is a sin. God decides. I personally think that the bible teaches that adultery, fornication, homosexual acts, pornography, incest, etc. are sins. The bible even teaches that lust is a sin. Lust affects most men at one time or another. Fortunately, God forgives when we confess our sins, repent and ask for forgiveness. The bible also tells us to love one another and forgive each other as He forgives us. Richard

      1 Corinthians 7 is the rule for the church on remarriage. If the unbeliever departs (and it is implied that he or she is an unbeliever), the believer is not bound, i.e. free to remarry. Don’t try to apply Jesus’ hyperbole to a Jewish audience to the New Testament church. Furthermore, divorce is a sin on the part of one party who has lied before God, a single event that can be forgiven. The celebration of a pervert union, on the other hand, is obviously something about which the participants are not repentant.

    Uh, just what are your criteria for “major religion”? You’ve got a list here that doesn’t distinguish between religions with a billion adherents (some with numerous sub-sects) around the world on one hand and associations with a couple hundred thousand at most on the other. Most seem to have some sort of historical impact in the US (albeit some only recently, others mainly in the past), yet none of the historic African-American and/or Pentecostal churches are included.

    Part of me doesn’t want to comment on this. Part of me wants to cry. I am a Christian. I do my best to read the word of God, and sometimes I falter. Yet, whenever I pray and ask God for guidance about this issue in particular, I always get a clear and powerful answer. The Bible is the main foundation of first Judism and later Christianity. The Bible states that man is inherently born of sin. Therefore, even the most devout of believers is in some way tainted. Including the men who wrote the Bible. This leads me to think. We are made to think(hence the brains), so that to me means that we will have to figure some things out on our own. Meaning keeping God in mind, but thinking and making decisions for ourselves, for the good of all people. I try to shadow my life towards what Jesus teaches.(does not say one thing about homosexuality) then I look to the 10 commandments (again no reference directly to himosexuality) next I take a look at when this book was written. During the time period, it was socially impossible to have a caring, loving, and meaningful homosexual relationship. Again Not Possible, most gay relationships were purely about satiating sexual needs. This is simply not true today. Gay people can and do love eachother, truly. They have just as much relationship issues as straight couples. If they love God, I will not be the one, and no one should, to have the gall to speak for God on this issue. I love the Lord with all of my heart, mind, soul, and strength. As I write this I feel His approval wash over me. So enough with the self-righteous condemnations. I dare every human Christian or not to love their neighbors as they love themselves, and take a step out of your dogmatic perspectives. God will be the judge in the end, I know this, and I know that my God is full of love, and the fact that I try to show the same love to everyone will mean something. This I do believe.

      To Nick-I am replying to your comment mainly because it got my attention and i want to do it in a very respectfully way. Basically i want to share something i considering very important due to the fact that the issue is relevant in this period of time of history of mankind.
      First,your comment is very interesting because it expresses sincerity from your perspective,besides some facts that are really true,for instance, the fact about being judgmental to others.
      Second,There are issues that are very delicate like this one in particular,but if we are really looking for the truth,there is not a better place to looking than the Bible.

      I have been reading the Bible since I was a child and something that is very clear to me is the fact that God wants to save every human being that has been born in this planet since Adam and Eve.

      God is love and for that particular reason He gave us a very important and extraordinary gift which we can call it “free will”.
      With this free will we can make choices and have the capacity to use it for God’s glory doing his will and practice justice with His help -or- with the same gift that we call free will we can make choices that are evil affecting God in the first place,affecting my neighbor and myself,in other words we can choose sin.

      Once we have in our hands the Bible, we can do a better choice knowing directly from God what GOOD is and what EVIL is. Only He is the one who can tell us what is entirely correct for us.Now,in the other hand,we know that Satan wants to confuse us and lead us to choose EVIL as we know from Adam and Eve in the garden on Eden;he is doing the same today,putting the seed of confusion on people’s mind and lying about GOD’s will.He is the master of deception.

      Another fact I have learned is that God’s will is very clear in the Bible and He is very interested that we have a very clear understanding about what to do.It was very clear to Adam and Eve:’Not eating from that specific three,they had everything they need it.

      Let’s take a closely and transparent look on the following verses in the Bible in which we can see clearly God’s will about this particular situation of Homosexuality as God has established.

      I do not want to lie to a person (man o woman) who is thinking that God will approve his behavior marrying a person from the same gender he or she belongs to…why? because if I say to them; Do not worry,God knows the situation and He loves you and he will accept that a man can have intimacy with another man if he wants to or a woman with another woman…if i am saying this to them, I will not helping them because i will lying as Satan did at the Garden of Eden when he said to Eve…”you surely wont die if you eat from that three’…if I saying to them that God will approve it,I certainly do not love my neighbor.But because I love my neighbor and I know Gods will i will share to them with love what is truth and encourage them to ask for God’s help.There are plenty of stories of people whom have success in this matter.

      In conclusion Nick..JESUS is saying clearly in Mark 10:4-7 that a relationship is between a man and a woman.
      Mark 10:4-7-4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife.

      Every one of us needs to change on something..everyone of us needs Lord’s grace to do so.These are just a few verses in the bible about this topic.
      Last year, i felt the same as you did..inside of me were tears of sadness because Christianity today is leading to apostasy and we are the ones who need to stay firm with God’s will and teach the world the Love of God,but everything you see today it was written that will happen this way..Lets share the love of God..the truly love,which freedom us from sin.

      Thank you for posting this and countering the negativity and self-importance on this forum. Some folks seem not to understand that children will read some of these comments and think God probably hates them. It is important to let these children know there is nothing wrong with them. They are beautiful children of God and God loves them exactly as they are. The fault is in the people who say hateful things because they are unwilling to challenge their own thinking and instead give themselves a cop out by convincing themselves their thinking is actually God’s thinking. They refuse to admit the Bible can and should be interpreted through the lens of modern context. If the Bible can be interpreted by all major denominations to say slavery is bad (even though Colossians commands slaves to obey their masters), that it is ok to eat pork (even though Leviticus tells us not to), and that incest is not okay (even though Lot and his daughters did it), then why can’t it be interpreted to bless the union of two loving, consenting adults who wish to care for each other until death do they part?

        Jesus was pretty upset about the money lenders, but conservative Christians have no problem charging interest, benefiting from financial activities, or engaging in banking. Funny how that restriction has loosened over time because it’s so inconvenient for you. But some ancient writing that related to the sexual abuse of young boys is still the byword for committed, consensual, and loving relationships between same sex adults.     Our group, tried to find out the will of God about same-sex marriage. We arranged a few dozen site visitors who had an active prayer life AND who personally disapproved of SSM. They prayed to God and almost all reported that God had replied. In 100% of time they reported that He
    also disapproved of SSM. At the same time we had a few dozen visitors who prayed often AND who approved of SSM pray to God. Again God responded in almost all cases. In 100% of the time God replied that He also approved of SSM. It appears that God really doesn’t care. See

    While this data is interesting, I find the way that the chart is presented can actually create a false impression. By listing the denominations in the way that it does, it “appears” that there are almost as many denominations that support gay marriage as those that don’t, which is completely untrue.

    Why, for instance, is the American Baptist Church listed (which has 1.2% of US adults that identify as belonging) but not the Assemblies of God (1.4%). Why isn’t the National Baptist Convention (1.8%) listed as well as a denomination that opposes same sex marriage?

    It just seems that the chart isn’t telling the full picture on the number of denominations (by attendance) and their positions on this issue.

    It should be said that Islam makes a distinction between homosexuality (a person who is gay) and gay marriage. The prohibition of homosexuality in “Islam” doesn’t actually have a sound scriptural basis and can be said to be mostly cultural (e.g. Arab). The Quranic verse on which most rulings on homosexuality are based can be interpreted in many different ways. One such interpretation is that the people of Lot were punished not because of homosexuality itself but the public (and adulterous) nature of it. Since the Qur’an doesn’t prescribe punishment for homosexuality itself, an open act of homosexuality such as gay marriage can only be punished if it is considered an act of adultery. This means no physical punishment can be prescribed unless a person comes out and commits homosexual acts “openly” (as to mean that it meets the criteria of adultery according to Islamic jurisprudence, i.e. 4 witnesses). This may be too fine a point to matter in real life but still a significant theological one since it differs from most Christian views on the issue.

    Why not? These days the gays have found a way to interperate the bible as they see fit. Their agenda has always been to get main stream media to accept their behavior as the norm. Religion as we know it is no longer about God, it’s about the money, well mostly about the money. Makes me think of Ceflo Dollar (now there’s an oxymoron for you) and his several million dollar airplane and extravagant trips (who doe’s he think he is, Michelle and Barack Obama?) Then there are the states that are determined to remove any reference to God off of their buildings. Also our schools no longer say the Pledge of Allegiance and of course prayer isn’t allowed. But in New York City, two Muslim holidays are now noticed and schools closed to observe them. Are we screwed up or what? Then there’s the American soldier that wrapped his newborn baby in an American Flag and caused a stir among the liberals around the nation. Guess it’s legal to burn the American Flag and stomp on it, but wrap your baby in it, no way. I guess I’m still old fashioned about believing what happens behind closed doors between two or more consenting adults is their business and why should I care. But to make up a whole new identity based on how they achieve orgasm and I’m supposed to buy it, not going to happen. Take that idea to a Muslim country and see how it flys. For now if I was a religion I guess if it increases donations, let’s let it happen. Certainly our Bible which clearly defines the basic guidelines for human relationships is now a matter on interpretation.

    I find it interesting to see a debate like this with all these self-proclaimed Christians removing slivers from each other’s eyes and forgetting the beams in their own. There are many good reasons to believe in same-sex marriage for Christians. When the word “abomination” is used in the Bible, it does not mean “something much worse than ordinary sin”. It is actually not being called a sin at all. An abomination was something that was unholy and made a person ritually unclean, regardless of sin. Shellfish and pork were abominations. Touching a dead person was an abomination. The effect of these things was for people to become ritually unclean, which had various implications about attending the temple or synagogue or offering sacrifice. While some abominations had harsh penalties, that did not mean they were regarded as sin. Typically, seven days of purification was sufficient. Not only that, but for Christians, the ritual purity laws are all done away, including proscriptions against shellfish, sideburns, mixed-fiber clothing, tattoos, kosher, homosexuality, and many others. So it is of no use for Christians to look to the Old Testament for guidance on what is and is not sin, aside from the Decalogue, which is not about purity.

    St. Paul had his opinions about homosexuality and labeled it a sin, but he frequently parted ways with the teachings of Jesus. While he did not seek to prohibit marriage, he was celibate and opposed to marriage. He said he would allow it, but he also observed that celibacy was a more holy way of living. As he disagrees with Jesus on some important points, I will subordinate his point of view to Jesus’ statements, given that I believe Jesus to be the Son of God. Jesus is recorded zero times as saying anything about homosexuality. I think he was leaving that to us to work out. It is also worth noting that the Greek words Paul used that are translated as “homosexuality” today were never used in his time to refer to consensual, monogamous sexual contact. They were used to refer to pagan temple prostitution, which involved the sexual exploitation of underage slaves. Sounds like this would be worth forbidding. But simple homosexual contact between consenting free adults is not mentioned in the New Testament. There are also, however, good reasons to consider keeping the old proscriptions. I just think a little humility is in order regardless of how one sees this issue. Telling people they are stupid or that they are going to Hell for the way they see this issue really sound like “mote removal” to me.

        The depth and breadth of possible interpretation of the Scriptures is inversely proportional to the individual’s Biblical knowledge, continuous study, and willingness to be guided by the Holy Spirit. Almost any verse or chapter can be “interpreted” widely and even wildly in a vacuum.

        Serious hermeneutical exegesis largely limits and even eliminates most of the casual attempts at explanation which have more in common with interpretive dance that anything approaching faithful or scholarly and prayerful investigation.

    I don’t think it is accurate to put an asterisk by the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Yes, it is the case that individual pastors may choose not to officiate at same-gender weddings, but you’re not reporting which denominations compel their clergy to perform certain weddings. You are reporting which denominations sanction same-gender weddings. The ELCA sanctions the marriage of two men or of two women.

    For those of you who think homosexuality should be accepted and praised, how do you expect the human race to survive as a species? Men and men don’t produce children and women and women don’t produce children. If you say well use artificial means, this will always deprive a child of having one biological parent married and living with the other parent. So all children in a sense will have one step parent or donor sperm or egg parent as well as maybe a surrogate to deliver the baby. My view could show homosexuality is not normal for the human species from both the scientific theory of how species survive, and the Bibles view that God will not destroy us, rather we will destroy ourselves. When every human decided homosexual relations and sexual activity is the way to go, eventually the human race will die out due to no conceiving or birth of children in a natural sense. This is my view and no counselor, researcher or other will change my perspective. I am entitled to my believes just as well as homosexuals are entitle to their own believes. Just think about what I mentioned above and decide for yourself how homosexuality is good for the survival and health of the human species.

        We can claim that there are fewer cases of divorce among same-sex couples. This remains a claim as long as we don’t have any statistics. Can one say with certainty that when we have 50 million gay or lesbian couples we won’t have worse cases of abuse and divorce?

        I think we do not need to go to the new testament or to the law to know God’s original intention for marriage. Here’s the biblical account of the first couple in Genesis chapter 2:

        18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
        20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
        22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
        23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
        24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. KJV

        One doesn’t need to be a professor of theology to note that:
        1. God saw that the man was alone and went on to create a woman (not another man).
        2. The passage concludes that a man shall leave his parents and cleave to a woman (not another man).

        Either we choose to disbelieve the bible (in which case we are not Christians), or we believe that this a simple account of what God intended for marriage to be. Satan is a master counterfeiter and has over the years succeeded at counterfeiting literally everything God made. But counterfeit is counterfeit and can never be equated with the original. I generally do not blame my fellow christians who fall prey to his counterfeiting tricks: this is all satan’s handiwork.

        Here’s one reason homosexual marriages can never be like the original: they cannot procreate! Yet God blessed the first couple to be fruitful and multiply. While I do not hate homosexuals, I hate homosexuality; I do not hate liars, I hate lies, I do not hate idolaters, i hate idolatry. So, when I lie, I accept that I have sinned and go to God like David for forgiveness. I do not look for justification from the Bible for lying! Jesus accepts us but hates our sin! That he accepts us as he did the woman who was caught in the act of adultery would certainly not mean he licenced it.

        Some people claim that because Jesus was silent on homosexuality, then he didn’t consider it sinful. I think that’s faulty logic. don’t remember Jesus sitting down to list what was sinful and what wasn’t. At least he approved of a heterosexual marriage because the first miracle was at such a wedding!

        The God of the Arden of Eden has not changed because He is the same yesterday, today and for ever. If He ordained marriage between men and women, He has not changed that statute yet.

      Allowing homosexual marriage will not increase the number of homosexuals , nor will it decrease the number of Heteros having kids. I don’t think anyone has ever said “ohh now that gay people can marry i’m not going to have kids”. The replacement rate is 2.1 children, many families have more than 3 children. That could easily account for the number of gay people, ( it is not like population growth hasn’t exploded over the past 200 years ). Also there are gay families that do have kids , or they adopt them. A policy against homosexual marriage is almost always rooted in religious belief, and religion should not effect policy in a country built around freedom of expression.

      You are absolutely entitled to your beliefs and I respect that. Now just as you have requested we think about what you have mentioned (and I have, I assure you), I respectfully encourage you to consider my own thoughts on what you have said.
      There is no reason to assume that allowing homosexuality to be “accepted and praised” will lead to the disappearance of heterosexuality. Firstly, no one is suggesting that as we accept homosexuality we should discourage heterosexuality. Both are to be equally acceptable. Furthermore, until fairly recent societal changes, for centuries it was solely acceptable to be heterosexual and yet there are and always have been homosexual people. If homosexuality existed all the while it was only acceptable to be heterosexual, why then would you assume that if homosexuality were to be acceptable that heterosexuality would disappear?

        i would be careful saying that no christian would agree that being gay is wrong, that would sugest the requirement of perfection before salvation. God accepts people as they are withe the only requirement being repentance, aceptance of his gift of forgivness and, as a result, a desire to do things the way god intended (trusting him with their lives and giving over to his will for their lives). part of this is accepting Gods veiws on marige. God invented marrige so it makes sence that those who trust him would follow his instructions when it comes to relationships.

        this said, the world has rejected the life God has for us and chosen to do their own thing, so it makes sence that people do there own thing when it comes to marrige. when people reject God the go after other things they think will make them happy.

It is completely opposite God’s law and it is being done in the church! God made marriage between a man and a woman and the body speaks against homosexuality. Sex is for reproduction first and then pleasure. The first instance is not possible, because God did not make it that way. And with the second instance, satan has you utterly confused to think of this as pleasure(either insane or demonic)! If you are following a leader who clamors for this or a vote, then it is walking out time! If it is the congregation, then maybe it’s time to do some separating and putting out or for the unwilling members to leave!

There is not less grace for this sin. We are to show love not hate and witness to everyone. But we cannot approve or support any sin.       Laura, as Danny said, you can ask and receive forgiveness, grace can’t be used as a free pass to sin without effort to change. And, the church cannot sanction it. They cannot allow members who refuse to repent, to attempt to put sin behind them, to be official members. It is said that if a person refuses to repent they must be asked to leave. Now I assume that a person should be given some time to make the decision before this would happen, but it is state in Romans. You can’t take what you want and leave the rest. That’s not how it works.

    How many sins can a church “vote” to accept? None. Those “churches” that condone “Same Sex” marriages are not “Christian” anymore than a Basketball player can be considered a Football player that dribbles on a football field and says he his playing football.

    This is like saying The NBA votes to accept the 3 point shot for NFL teams. Both are sports but play a game with entirely different rules.

    It would be like comparing PGA golf to frisbee golf its just not logical.

Now you are supposed to consult with other brothers, to assure that you are not mistaken, but we are to keep the church holy. Yes we are also to look in the mirror. Homosexual acts should not be singled out as the only sin to hold people accountable on. But this is the issue being discussed.

    The most hypocritical religion is protestantism. When you are hetero man and pastor you can even get marry, but in very few protestants denominations homosexuals can marry. I think few days ago maybe God only support civil union and church blessings for homosexuals, but it is possible that maybe Lord support equal right for homosexuals – same sex marriage. I don’t know. I’m conservative catholic and I must be carefull about what want God. When i will be atheist, buddhist or protestant I must support same sex marriage or when I don’t support it I will be most hypocritical and unfair bigot. But I’m conservative catholic and I only support civil union and church blessing. One reason that I don’t know to support these marriages is anger of God.

    Sadly, so many churches are falling away. The Bible no longer is their authority, and with heretical theologians offering some twisted and distorted reasoning for the immoral and unnatural idea of two men or two women being “married” to one another…..we now face an apostasy of huge proportions in American Christianity. The Bible speaks of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding feast. The very notion of a same gender marriage ever mentioned then or 2000 years later would offend most everyone calling themselves a believer. It is just plain wrong and used to be “unthinkable” and gross. But here we are now, in 2014, living in a land growing increasingly wicked, at a time and place when Christian churches refuse to bear any light in an age of darkness. God forgive us, because some of our American churches now hold their conservative and orthodox brothers and sisters in disdain, hold God’s word in contempt, and have joined in the chorus of the wicked to celebrate sin instead of testifying against it.

    The fact of the matter is that religious organizations were happy to feed from the government’s hand when it was advantageous and society was basically moral; now we see a reversal of societal roles and the same hand smacking religious liberty in the face. Now we see religious having to beg to have their so-called rights back. The same privileges associated with a religious sacrament, marriage, has become secularized and progressives with the force of government are all to happy to use that to wedge the churches out of society.

    Government has never been the friend of religion; except in times when the religious were in the seat of government. The law is theft, as Bastiat said. You go to bed with a thief and you will wake up naked.

    I am devoutly religious, and traditional, but this is the deal that was made by aligning religion with the State while accepting the special treatment.

    What business is it of anybody else what law-abiding adults do in their private life? Surely the courts will strike down laws that ban close relative marriages as they violate the constitutional rights of law-abiding adults to marry the close relatives they dearly love.

    Homosexuality is a sin. Here is why. God when he created us made it so man and woman could reproduce. He wanted man and woman to be married and create children on this earth. We are not to marry a man because it would go against God’s wishes for us. To even question this is going against God.

    That being said, God still forgives us no matter what we choose. Homosexuals will ultimately be forgiven. We are all sinners.Everyone of us here on earth will be sinners until the day we day. No man, I say again no man on this earth is without sin. Even the Pope is a sinner. To question this also goes against God. The only one without sin was Jesus Christ. And he died for us so that we could be forgiven of our sins.

    You see, it’s a reproduction thing why homosexuality is a sin. God wanted man and woman to reproduce and be married. Let’s just put it this way. If the entire world went gay and stopped reproducing. The world would end in about 100 years. Nobody would be there to reproduce since we all went against God and wanted to be gay. Yes gays can adopt and raise a child together but how do they get that child? A woman had to give birth to it. We need women on this earth for reproduction. Same thing with women to women marriage. With no man, women can’t reproduce.

    If people want to be gay it will still be a sin, but again sin is forgiven. But I think marriage, absolutely not. No way should a homosexual be allowed to get married. Civil unions and domestic partnerships are ok. Because those aren’t the same as marriage. Marriage is a biblical institution, and to go against what the bible says about marriage is to go against God. I have gone against God in my life and the consequences weren ‘t good so I repented and got baptised and changed my ways. Not saying gays should do this but still it is good for them to go to church and repent.

        Tez, I’m not trying to be offensive when I say your logic is limited. Because you have not yet found a relationship with God, does not mean that God does not exist. Also, that old line that people who don’t agree with homosexuality as an acceptable righteous lifestyle, are themselves hiding a repressed feeling, has no founding. Homophobia does exist, but it is not fear of becoming gay, but fear of something they don’t understand. But not all people who believe homosexuality is a sin are homophobic. Many know and love a family member or friend who is gay, but that does not mean they approve of it. There is a difference between asking for tolerance and asking for approval or support.

          No, it’s actually true that homophobia is correlated to homosexual desires. The stronger the homophobia, the the firmer the arousal when exposed to homosexual imagery. There have been studies on this. Awfully interesting, isn’t it!

          It’s clear from many of the comments on this article that many conservative Christians have strong homosexual impulses, because they think if we accept homosexual activity as normal, no one will have babies anymore. They must have very strong desires for same sex relationships to find them so horrendously tempting. It also suggests that they aren’t that happy with their current opposite sex experiences and would give them up if they had the option.

          Actually until I read though these comments, I had no idea there were so many Christians with a yen gay sex. But hey, if you believe your god wants you to abstain, you should definitely do that!

    Where Hinduism stand on same sex marriage is very open. Hindu Veddas tell a story of two male gods Siva(who is half women and half male) and Vishnu(god of spreme birth) in a Purana story gave birth to the God Aiyappan. Mostly male genders ,wearing all black dress make journey to this temple which is located in the hills of Kerala province. Even though gay marriages are not practiced in Hinduism. Gay couples have lived in stories of Puranams and ithihaasams.

      As far as I can tell, from what I’ve seen and read, most churches still say marriage is one man and one woman. Certain sources may claim that it is the minority of churches that don’t condone homosexuality, but I’ve found it is the opposite.

    I am horrified that the church closest to my own church, still refuses to sanction gay marriage or to even bless same sex unions.
    Jesus Christ came to bring us into the way of love, that to me includes everyone including those who we believe it is impossible to love. It is all too easy to glibly state that we love everyone but it simply isn’t true. To love is to actively love to invite the challenge and to meet it gratefully because we have an opportunity to change, to embrace the ability to change given us by the Holy Spirit. If we don’t it means nothing and we lie.

      Lyn, Jesus did love everyone. He showed love to the sinners, ate with them, spoke with them, basically was a friend to them. But nowhere did he approve of their sin. You cannot change God to what you want from Him. Jesus said “Let he without no sin cast the first stone. But then he said go and sin no more.” Do not let the enemy twist God’s word. There were many things stated in the bible that were for a specific time and situation. But if something is said consistantly through different parts of the bible, it is meant for now also.

The most common response that I received was, “What is the big deal?” The majority of them knew at least one child who has same sex parents, and they speculated that there were probably many more among their acquaintances for whom they had no idea what the kid’s parental situation (married, divorced, same sex, separated, abandoned, widowed, never married, etc.) is.

        Why do you think this is so? Could it be that (1) they don’t read the Bible, (2) they did not have parents who had the time or biblical knowledge to provide any guidance to their children or be an example of christian living to their children, or (3) they have never heard a preacher give a sermon for or against anything – just a weekly little 30 minute jump start to help you feel better about yourself and leave you with that “warm and fuzzy good feeling” about yourself and this God-friendly, God-fearing nation we live in (NOT). They know what they have been taught – which is nothing. The old saying “a man who stands for nothing will stand for anything” could also apply to the church. Jesus wanted us to love and serve our brothers and sisters in Christ, but he also told us to repent and turn from sin and live changed lives – lives that do not conform to the world but stand out from the world. If you cannot tell a difference between people of the world and people of the church, there is something seriously wrong with the church. Also, a large congregation is not a sure indicator of a faithful church – as a matter of fact I am very suspect of a church with large numbers of people – given the character of the average christian today, you know there probably has to be some serious worldly entertainment going on for that many to show up.

    From all I can find David Masci’s statements concerning the position United Church of Christ is at worst absolutely wrong or an outright lie and at best overly simplified! As with most other issues the position of the United Church of Christ on Gay Marriage is to be addressed by the individual congregation! I find this to be far from what he stated! Any person with the title “Senior Researcher” should pick his words with more care – unless his goal was to promote a particular pro gay marriage agenda. While I personally would do nothing to forbid gay marriage I would never write any article which bends the truth.

      I also met at a dADt rally in DC a retired 2 star general in full uniforM and he told us that we had lost about 50 arabic translators due to DADt. About 300 hundred soldiers were killed in Iraq where later it was found that if we had those translators we would have done things very differently and most would not have died

    While it is technically true that it has only been a couple of decades that some of our Unitarian Universalist minsters have “married” same gender couples, since it has only been possible to have a legally recognized marriage for that long, many of us have performed religious marriages for same gender couples for much longer. My first such wedding was 33 years ago in a small town in Georgia and I know quite a number of Unitarian Universalist colleagues who blessed the spiritual weddings for gblt couples in the 1970’s. So it was a joyful day when Iowa caught up with us nearly three decades later and I could perform my first “legal” marriage of two women. We knew, even four decades ago, that those who used the Bible to condemn homosexuality were catering to the prejudices of their day in the same way that those who used the Bible to celebrate slavery or forbid women the vote did in the 19th century.

Those religions that do believe in gay marriage can marry gays. The contract with the state that all marriages establish can obviously be entered into by gays or non-gays. If you are in a religion that doesn’t believe in gay marriage, don’t marry a gay person. Gay marriage does NOT harm non-gay marriage in any way. Those of you who don’t think gays should marry, please go away while we UU’s (and other denominations) help create wonderful unions between people who love each other.

    The legal recognition of same-sex marriage will become the law of the land due to Sect. 1 of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which requires equal treatment under the law in all States for all citizens. The SCOTUS has determined that marriage is a civil right. As such SSM is a civil right regarding eligibility to enter into the legal contract of marriage. That said the religious sacrament celebrated by churches can put in place any restrictions they choose thanks to the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. As the country works through the progression of legalizing SSM in all States it in no way has any impact on the policies of any religious organization. No clergy will be forced to officiate any wedding for any couple who are in violation of the teachings and beliefs of their church. However the legal status of the marriage contract with all its rights and responsibilities must be offered equally to all citizens.

    I’m not trying to defend the ELCA as I believe they are definitely going apostate. But I’m reading the ELCA documents the article links to, and I’m not seeing any sanctioning of same sex marriage or leaving it to individual pastors whether or not to carry out same sex marriage ceremonies. The only place I find reference to a pastor’s discretion is here:

    “Lutherans long have afrmed that the public accountability of marriage, as expressed through a legal contract, provides the necessary social support and social trust for relationships that are intended to be sustained through- out life and within changing and often challenging life situations. In this country, pastors carry both legal and religious responsibilities for marriage. In carrying out these responsibilities, pastors hold and exercise pastoral discretion for the decision to marry in the church. In the community of the church they preside over the mutual promises made between a couple seeking the lifelong, monogamous, and faithful relationship of marriage.”

    This comment is made in the context of already having defined marriage as a man and a woman. They do mention the disagreement about what to call same sex relationships, but in the document linked in the article it does not say that homosexual marriages can be performed by ELCA pastors. The last thing I heard that they did regarding this was allow practicing homosexuals to be ordained.

      I think it is wise to remember what apostate means. You can only be apostate when you are outside the Christian faith. While I do believe they teach some doctrines that are condemned by the historic church, they still confess the ecumenical creeds; they still have the sacraments; they still preach Christ crucified and risen from the dead.

      The ELCA has affirmed that its ordained pastors may perform same-sex marriages in states in which that is a legal option. As this article acknowledges, the churchwide ELCA has provided for freedoms (e.g. the ability to call a pastor who is in a committed, monogamous same-sex relationship, the ability of a pastor to celebrate a same-sex marriage or union). However, individual congregations and pastors decide how or whether to respond to these possibilities.

      I hope that is helpful clarification. The ELCA has been careful and intentional in its discernment as a community.

    I believe the official position of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is that congregations that desire to do so can offer liturgies and blessings for “publicly accountable lifelong, monogamous, same-gender relationships.” I believe the church intentionally avoided the use of the word “marriage” for these same gender relationships.

    As a Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) I am constantly having to make the distinction between the PCUSA and the PCA. Although the author does make a note saying that the Presbyterian Church of America (note: it should be IN not OF) does not allow same sex marriages, he goes on to say, later in the article that, “The Presbyterian, Episcopal and Lutheran churches also have endured similar turmoil over gay marriage and similar issues, …” It would have been much clearer and more effective and considerent to all of the Presbyterian denominations in the U.S. if he would have tried to remain consistent with the distinction.

    I for one, left the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, for their embracing of the homosexual agenda. Until about 50 years ago, nobody would hear such nonsense from churches, even suggesting that homosexuality (read that to include GLBT) was normal or should be embraced/supported.

    It was the political agenda of liberalism, which brought the problem. More than just about anything, it has served to split Christianity and leave the conservative wing hardly able to tolerate the revisionist/liberal wing.

    Thank you for the continued work to keep us informed on the many issues we are all facing in these days. We can all vote to accept Gay Marriage but the Bible votes against it. It is really pretty simple. Yet, the complexity comes from the “Cafeteria Faith” that picks and chooses what to believe, even though the statements are very clear. I have been counseling Homosexuals for years and few I talk with really understand the choices and how as well as how they are made. I have many friends who are Gay. Fortunate for me, all of them respect my view as I respect their choice. The most disheartens actions in the whole issue are those who hate…on both sides. I know that if all would leave the matter to those who choose either way of life and not seek to make others, either by law or use of guilt and any means to get their way, all would be happier. Now in some places a person with real tendency to be gay want to choose not to be cannot see therapy or just plain counsel. That is taking it to the level that only makes matters worse. Rather than wanting to be, for instance, an ordained minister in the Methodist Church that has a rule against it, go to a church that is at peace about it. The ‘in your face’ gays are making a great mistake, in my opinion. None of my friends are of that ilk.
    Bless them all for finally this short period here will be over and we will get the final word where there is Absolute Truth. I think many on both sides will surprised.

        I didn’t see any biblical basis for their decision on homosexual marriage; however there is a lot of scripture about not staying in our sin. People get confused when they hear that God’s love covers a multitude of sins and they take that to mean that He is okay with us living out our sin. God does loves us all no matter what our sin is; however, He wants all of us turn away from our sin everyday and become more like Him, not embrace our sin and try to make God more like us so that we can live in our sin everyday. When people hear John 3:16 they don’t hear the full message because they take it out of the context it was written in. Here is the full context: “John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
        I can hear the next question from those that believe homosexuality is not a sin (evil): “Who are you to say that homosexuality is a sin? Why do you hate homosexuals?” First of all, I don’t hate homosexuals. I have friends and family who are homosexuals; however, I do hate the sin in me and all of us whether it is cheating on your spouse, lying, stealing, murder, homosexuality, etc. Second, I can only say that homosexuality is a sin because the bible says it is a sin in numerous places:
        Leviticus 18:22“‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.”
        Leviticus 20:13“‘If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. ”

        Romans 1:24 “Therfore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

        26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

        28Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice.         1 Corinthians 6:9″Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

        1 Timothy 1:8″We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine 11that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.”

        Those are 5 scriptures that say homosexuality is a sin. I haven’t seen any scriptures that say “allow homosexual couples to marry each other because this is holy in God’s sight”, “continually cheat on your spouse with anyone you want as long as they are attractive to you”, “lie to each other and steal whatever you want”, “be sure to do whatever makes you happy” because those scriptures do not exist.

        Any church or denomination that does not preach and practice ONLY the Word of God, is no longer part of God’s church by their very action of accepting the world’s view instead of God’s view.

        Christians we have to make sure we aren’t just stating out opinions, instead we need to state the scriptures.

      the further east you go into the former soviet union the fewer you see with marriage, eg zero. though austria, Hungary, slovenia and Chech repub have CUs

      South america is changing – Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Mexico have marriage, Equador has civil unions the situation is confused in columbia but it looks like CUs are in place. Of course canada has full marriage, same re NZ, Australia has a hodge podge of civil unions, we shall see , give them a few years Cus are under dicsussion in chile and the president of peru is supporting the idea of marriage equality

    One important distinction is that whereas the Presbyterian Church-USA can to some degree claim to represent Presbyterians (they are about 80% of all America’s Presbyterians) and the Episcopal Church can likewise claim to represent Anglicans in America (they are about 85% of America’s Anglicans), the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America cannot claim to represent America’s Lutherans. They are a little over half of America’s Lutherans and sinking fast, while the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, which does not support any of these developments, is larger than any liberal main-line church other than ELCA and the United Methodist Church–they are larger than the Episcopal Church or the Presbyterian Church-USA. Numerous congregations are leaving ELCA, principally into the North American Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ, and the Augsburg Lutheran Churches.

However, the author is right, because national has written down “that the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.” So – officially ABC-USA opposes same sex marriage. We just happen to not have to do what the denomination says since the power lays with the local church.

    A quick correction — the ELCA allows each congregation to determine if their minister may preside over same-sex marriages. The decision rests with the congregation, because the pastor is called and ordained as a pastor to a people. (Obviously, in practice, there can be significant dialogue over who’s making the real decision! But polity-wise, it is the congregation’s choice, not the pastor.)

Winder, Mike’s comments may have been a little over the top, but there can be no denying that the Church of LDS holds many beliefs that are unbiblical, can’t be found in the Scriptures, and are patently extra-biblical. Mormons are very, very good at embracing the Scriptures of the Bible when it suits them, and downplaying the many extra-biblical beliefs they hold. That said, as an evangelical Christian, I greatly admire the family values you speak of that LDS members hold to. They put many Christians to shame.

    I wish the graphic was more clear. “The Evangelical Lutheran Church” listed is “The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America” – just one of 20-some Lutheran church bodies in the US, and the only one that supports homosexual marriage.

      Good catch. I’m surprised that the graphic doesn’t represent a high standard of reporting. I usually expect better from Pew. “The Evangelical Lutheran Church” is a phrase that encompasses all Lutherans everywhere while “The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America” or ELCA is a particular subgroup of Lutherans.

      The graphic also shows a very Christian-centric focus. As noted above, Islam in America is not united on the subject. I’d be willing to be that Hinduism and Buddhism are not united either.

    Did you dig up any evidence of any denominations of non-Abrahamic religions that explicitly condemn homosexuality itself? I mean, I’ve come across religious stories that had same-sex relationships that were condemned but not for the same-sex part (such as some Hellenistic stories) and I’ve heard some passages argued to imply that homosexuality was a sin (such as the idea of sexual purity in Buddhism) which ultimately depends on a person’s interpretation of the passage, but I haven’t seen any quotes of leaders of non-Abrahamic religions (who claim that their decrees are a direct message from their deity or dieties) explicitly condemning homosexuality, no matter the circumstances, nor have I found any sort of passage from a holy text from a non-Abrahamic religion that can only be interpreted as homosexuality.

    Correction – the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod does not allow gay clergy. The LCMS also views believes that the Bible teaches that homosexual behavior is contrary to God’s Word and will, and seeks to minister to those who are struggling with homosexual inclinations.

    Please check the facts when lumping mainline denominations into the same category.

    Because of the stance of the ELCA, many congregations have left the ELCA. Their liberal policies and non-adherence to the Scriptures have brought this about. Our congregation in Liberty, TX, after discussion and prayer, voted to leave the ELCA. After severing the ties, we then became a congregation in the North American Lutheran Church. God will not be mocked.

    The recognition of homosexual marriage is something that the church cannot allow and remain faithful to the God of truth. It is not evidence of compassion to allow others to openly violate the clear teaching of the bible. Scripture describes those who practice the violation of the marriage covenant as taking steps that lead to Sheol; they live in accordance with death and damnation.
    If this is the case with those who practice the deeds, what about those who encourage such behavior through false teaching? A greater punishment comes upon the teachers of falsehood.
    The church is “the pillar and support of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). and must therefore adhere to and speak the truth concering God’s institution of marriage.
    Marriage is God’s institution. God invented it. God has set its terms, and no one has the right to alter them according to his own whim or preference.
    How does God describe marriage? It is the union between a man and a woman. God is the one who has determined the nature of marriage.

      Since the bible was written by men it’s a little disintegrous to claim it is God’s word. Furthermore most of the clobber verses have been twisted over the centuries to suit man’s political goals. i.e. King James was gay, the church could not come out and directly oppose the king, so in writing The King James version of the bible they twisted verses as a way to criticize the king. Why is it people claim that Sodom was destroyed for homosexuality; yet other parts of the bible refer to Sodom’s sin as pride and inhospitality?

        It wasn’t the Church that commissioned the translation of the English Bible (King James), it was King James himself who authorized it (hence it’s known as the Authorized Version). A simple study of the Hebrew and Greek will prove that their translations were 100% true and accurate. Also, please note that these same translations were also in the 1599 Geneva Bible and the earlier English Bibles as well as (most) subsequent English BIbles. It really didn’t take a turn downhill until the NIV came about. They softened their stance because a.) They used the Alexandrian Scripts and b.) there was a confessed Lesbian on the translating committee. So the NIV was poisoned from the beginning.

        If you read the Genesis account, the men of Sodom clearly want to forcibly sleep with the men (angels of God) that stayed with Lot. This is in a culture where you slaughter the fattened calf and throw a feast for complete strangers when they ask to stay with you. Instead, the men of Sodom want to rape these men, even over two virgin girls. Clearly, Sodom’s sins were homosexuality, inhospitality, and pride. Homosexuality, for obvious reasons. Inhospitality, for obvious reasons. And pride, because they thought that they were above the culture and treated it with contempt.

        Bobby, your comments are simply not accurate. You present a fallacy when you say “since the bible was written by men…”

        Now if you don’t think God is capable of doing what He says, then I suppose I can’t go much further with you. However what does the Scripture say? “All Scripture is God-breathed…” what does this mean? It means that the Bible, our Scripture, is a collection of writings completely different than any other canon or book in the world! What other scripture is God-breathed? What other book can truly claim that? Now of course if you respond “that was written by a man too”, well then you are stuck in your disbelief and no further discussion is profitable.

        However if your faith demands or at least says to you “with God all things are possible”, then is it possible that what Scripture says IS true? And if it is truly possible, why not give God the benefit of the doubt rather than relying on your own reason and your own understanding. Afterall, what does the ancient Proverb say? “Trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding.”

        To doubt Scripture is to make an idol of your own mind – and that was truly the sin of Eve when she ate thinking she knew better than God.

      In the case of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, extensive study of the bible and the confessions of the church was carried out and debated before the denomination’s churchwide assembly passed the changes in church rules which allowed clergy in same sex committed relationships to be ordained and rostered, and opened the possibility for same sex marriage. A slight correction to the footnote, the decision on whether to marry a same sex couple in an ELCA church is the decision of both the pastor and the congregation council. And the ultimate decision to marry any couple is up to the pastor, no matter if they are same sex of opposite sex, even if the state has issued a marriage license.

      The reason is that the mainstream media HAS to make an effort to ensure it looks tilted to favor the liberal side in anything. In this case, though most people can name 10 or more other large church organizations that would land in the “prohibits” column, adding them would show that this column is actually larger than all of the others. So instead they add “just enough” to make it look like some are opposed, but show “more than enough” on the other side to make it seem like everyone is on the liberal agenda side. You can make any poll say anything you want by selecting what elements and words to use. That’s one of the first things they taught us in college.

    It seems more natural to have multiple “spouses” of the opposite sex. The logical question is why is that prohibited? It seems anything goes now and the standard is…..none. For all the politically correct talk, those churches who sanction what Scripture denies, are the ones losing members. They make their choices. Those who exhibit courage and disagree are called “haters” or ignorant. Those who roll over in fear are somehow the enlightened ones. Pander all you’d like. It won’t fill the collection plates.

    Real Christians reject homosexuality and homosexual marriage. Rejection of homosexuality does not automatically indicate one is a Christian, but acceptance of them does mean one is not a real Christian.

      There are numerous Christian denominations (most estimates being around 42,000). They have different views on numerous subjects. Who are you to decide which ones are real Christians and which are not? Your statement is known as pride and that is considered a sin.

      Christianity (noun)- “the religion based on the person and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, or its beliefs and practices.”

      There is yet any evidence to suggest Jesus himself said anything about homosexuality. On the other hand, he said a whole lot about “loving thy neighbor” and other “undesirables”, living the golden rule, and serving others and being kind. He did not stand down from people in religious or political power and often challenged them, and he tried to convert others through examples, not threats.

        Bob – Jesus and His words are more than just the words in red in a Bible. He is the ENTIRE Bible: John 1:1–“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” If it’s in the Bible, it’s of Christ–and there’s plenty in the Bible that condemns homosexuality.

    I sincerely respect that any article of reasonably brief length cannot address the nuances of religious positions on same-sex marriage.

    That said, the article states that, “many of the largest religious institutions have remained firmly against allowing same-sex marriage, including the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Jewish movement.”

    Speaking as a Jew, I do not believe that the Orthodox Jewish movement constitutes one of the “largest religious institutions” in America. According to the Pew Center’s own research data, less than 10% of all American Jews affiliate with the Orthodox movement. As Jews comprise roughly 3% of Americans, that means that Orthodox Jews are 0.3 percent of Americans — is that seriously among the “largest religious institutions?”

    The Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist and unaffiliated Jewish populations make up the remaining more-than 90% of all American Jews. All of those faith traditions in Judaism embrace and support same-sex marriage and Pew’s own data reveal that roughly 85% of ALL American Jews support same-sex marriage.

    To the extent that Judaism as a whole (not just the Orthodox) is considered one of the “largest religious institutions” in America, Judaism is overwhelmingly supportive of same-sex marriage.

      Inis: Thanks for your comment. You’re correct about Orthodox Jews, although they are the fastest growing of the Jewish movements in the US. Regarding the sentence you reference: We wanted to list some of the traditions that oppose same-sex marriage and to include a variety of different ones in the mix. The reason that we said “largest” is because we included the Catholics and Southern Baptists and we wanted to let people know that they are, respectively, the first and second largest denominations in the US. Essentially it was a trade off. But, of course, you’re right about the Orthodox and thanks for pointing that out. David

    Who cares? Nobody cares about religious marriage except religionists–and there are plenty of religions around who are very happy to marry same-sex couples as long as they have a state-issued marriage license; they will even bless your relationship without a marriage license. The battle here is for equal rights under the U.S. Constitution to civil marriage. Religionists always think every issue is about them; this is not.

      In the State of Michigan, a clergyperson can be fined if s/he performs a marriage ceremony for any couple who do not present a valid (State-issued) marriage license.

      But of course, you’re correct – this is NOT a religious discussion. It’s about the secular, civil institution called civil marriage, NOT ‘holy matrimony’. I wish more “religionists” understood this fact. (Heck, I wish more would KNOW this fact.)

        Trouble is, as one of my clergy friends notes, clergy act as agents of the state in marriage, which makes it a joint state/religious discussion. In other countries, such as Germany, there is civil marriage and there is church marriage, and they are separate.

          The same in Mexico. In fact, the only valid marriage in Mexico before the alw is the civil, secular marriage. The religious marriage is valid only for the believers in that religion, but a marriage license issued by a religious institution has no value or cannot be used for taxes, credits or mortgages. In the practice, since Mexico is 84% Roman Catholic for many people the civil marriage is NOT valid, but that is a subjective opinion based on religious beliefs. When a married couple want to register his or her spouse for health benefits, tax issues etcetera, their religious marriage license is not accepted. On the other hand Churches and religious leaders are not allowed in our constitution to oppose the laws issued by Congress, in the practice religious leaders DO oppose civil laws, interfere with their opinions and have opposed same sex marriage who was legalized in mexico 5 days before than in the USA, by doing this they are breaking the law, but thye authorities or local police are too coward or lighthearted to apply the law on them.

        the utter problem of religion is really that people cant accept the fact that we are products of a billion years of evolution., of course which most conservative xtians deny and to buttress their claims say that the earth is only 6000 years old.

        Makes me wonder how manking would have suvived the dinosaurs, or were those critters the dogs of the past

        then we should ask why very intelligent distant cousins, just because they cant speak,e g gorillas etc ,our fourfooted friends eg dogs – whys houldnt they go to an after life- because they dont say yes sir to the church – rediculous

    The “turmoil” experienced in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since 2009 came about after more culturally traditionalist conservative members refused to accept the decision made by congregationally elected representatives to the national assembly after years of study and prayer. We say we believe the Holy Spirit guides decision-making at these assemblies, even if the vote is close. Nevertheless, the fact is that many conservatives refused to even participate in the discernment process in the first place. Then they refused to accept the outcome, or work to change things from within. They actually complained that they did not have input, and ended up tearing some congregations apart with their bitter recriminations. Thus splinter groups were formed claiming to be more congregationally based. However, the ELCA is a big tent, inclusive and diverse church. And as this Pew Report indicates, the ELCA itself gives complete power to individual congregations to make their own choices on these issues. Reactionary resistance to change impedes God’s mission in a changing world. Those who trouble God’s house, and divide the Body of Christ shall inherit the wind.

      When the presiding bishop, Bishop Chilstrom, wrote in The Lutheran that those who disagreed with gay marriage should leave the church, and “don’t let the door hit you on the way out”, he made it very clear that the leadership of the ELCA was not inclusive, and the decision to let people follow their consciences was entirely hollow.

      ELCA is “Lutheran” in name only. Luther upheld the Word as inerrant and inspired by God. The ELCA tramples and manipulates the Word to fit the “changing world.”

    Also, re-reading the article, it seems the United Church of Christ is considered a “religious group” instead of a mainline Protestant denomination. That designation would probably surprise a lot of UCC members!

    This is very interesting and i appreciate it in concept, but I think there are two flaws. One, it mixes up “religions” with religious organizations. I think it should be limited to specific religious organizations and should not include general belief systems like “Buddhism,” “Hinduism” and “Islam.” Contact specific organizations within those religions to get their positions on this issue, as Jeff Wilson suggested below.

    With Quakers, this is mistaken as well. There are three national organizations representing Quakerism in the U.S., along with many independent meetings and state-level “Conservative” affiliations that are not connected to a national group. Of the three national organizations, Friends General Conference does support same-sex marriage, but I am not sure about Friends United and I am quite sure the Evangelical Friends Association prohibits it.

      You are right!

      I would clarify something. These decisions are largely made by yearly meetings (regional bodies), not by national bodies. For the most part, Quakers associated with Friends General Conference do support same-sex marriage.

      Right now several regional bodies within Friends United Meeting and at least one with Evangelical Friends Church International are struggling with this issue.
