More Americans now prefer to get local news online, while fewer turn to TV or print. And most say local news outlets are important to their community.
True crime is the most common topic, making up 24% of top-ranked podcasts; 15% of the top podcasts focus on news. The next most common topics are politics and government (10%); entertainment, pop culture and the arts (9%); and self-help and relationships (8%).
A survey of U.S.-based journalists finds 77% would choose their career all over again, though 57% are highly concerned about future restrictions on press freedom.
The total number of journalists assigned to state capitol buildings is up 11% since 2014, though figures vary widely by state. And as newspapers employ fewer statehouse reporters, nonprofits are filling much of the void.
The percentage who say journalists have exaggerated the risks of the outbreak has decreased notably in recent weeks.
Many U.S. news organizations are covering the coronavirus pandemic while themselves facing financial pressure from the outbreak.
Nearly three out of four U.S. adults say that, in general, it’s important for journalists to function as watchdogs over elected officials.

Younger adults in eight Western European countries are about twice as likely as older adults to get news online than from TV. They also are more critical of the media’s performance and coverage of key issues.
A global median of 75% want their news media to be unbiased when covering political issues, yet many say the news media do a poor job of reporting on political issues fairly.
