We thought it would be valuable to combine our study of news coverage itself with data on people’s views about, and exposure to, that coverage.
The attack on the offices of the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo claiming 12 lives was the most closely followed news in the U.S. last week, but interest in the story was not as high when compared with four previous terrorist incidents abroad.
While some evidence suggests that the amount of news media coverage mirrored that of the public’s comments on the FCC’s proposed net neutrality policy changes, our analysis found that more likely drivers of comments were grassroots efforts, as well as a popular comedian’s 13-minute segment on net neutrality that aired on cable television and found a large online audience.
