As people are living longer and many young adults struggle to gain financial independence, 23% of U.S. adults are in the “sandwich generation.”
For Mother’s Day, here’s a snapshot of what motherhood looks like in the U.S. today, drawn from government data and Pew Research Center surveys.
About a third of U.S. parents with children under 18 say it’s extremely or very important to them that their kids share their religious beliefs.
Americans are more pessimistic than optimistic about the institution of marriage and the family. At the same time, the public is fairly accepting of diverse family arrangements, though some are seen as more acceptable than others.
On key economic outcomes, single adults at prime working age increasingly lag behind those who are married or cohabiting
36% of Americans say that more young adults living with their parents is bad for society, while 16% say it is good for society.
Additionally, about half of lower-income parents (52%) say they have not had enough money for food or their rent or mortgage.
A quarter of U.S. parents of K-12 students say racism or racial inequality comes up in conversation with their children very or fairly often.
Mothers are more likely than fathers to be extremely or very worried about a school shooting, and concerns also vary by race and ethnicity.
