The share of Americans who use Facebook is on the rise: 79% of online adults use the platform, more than double the share that uses Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram or LinkedIn.
36% of adult smartphone owners use messaging apps, while 17% use apps that automatically delete sent messages. These types of apps are adding to an already complex terrain of digital and social communication. Meanwhile, social media platforms continue to attract dedicated users.
Social media networks have become vital channels for Americans’ daily interactions. Our new report explores how parents turn to these networks for parenting-related information and social support.
While Facebook remains the most popular social media site, other platforms — like LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter — saw higher rates of growth over the past year. In 2014, 52% of online adults used two or more social media sites, up from 42% in 2013.

54% of internet users have posted original photos or videos to websites and 47% share photos or videos they found elsewhere online. Young adults and women lead the way in each of these activities.
Young men are especially likely to visit the “front page of the internet.”
Youth are sharing more personal information on their profiles than in the past. They choose private settings for Facebook, but share with large networks of friends.
Young adults are more likely than older adults to use social media. Women, African-Americans, and Latinos show high interest in sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.
