Expertise: Research Methodology
Steve Schwarzer is a senior research methodologist in the Pew Research Center international methods team and works on all of the Center’s international projects. Prior to joining the Center, Steve served as a director for methodology and statistics at TNS opinion (now part of Kantar Public), working on international survey projects for clients such as the European Commission, the World Bank, the European Development Bank and the European Central Bank. He was responsible for complex sample designs, questionnaire development, weighting and data-quality assessment. Steve previously also served as a consultant to Austria’s Federal Ministry of the Interior, supporting them in their survey work over several years. He started his career in the polling industry with SORA, a polling and consultancy firm in Vienna. He has presented on a broad range of methodological and substantive topics and worked as a lecturer for quantitative and qualitative research methods, cross-cultural research and civic education at the University of Vienna, Danube University of Krems (Austria) and Free University of Brussels (Belgium). He was awarded graduate and postgraduate scholarships from the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Institute for Advanced Studies (Vienna) and the European Commission’s Marie-Curie ELECDEM program (electoral democracies). Steve received his doctorate in the social sciences from the Georg-August University Göttingen, Germany.
