Nearly four-in-ten Americans (39%) say they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who is “Christian,” the second most positive trait tested, behind only “military service” (48%).
That’s the proportion of U.S. adults who say they see themselves as Christians first rather than as Americans first. An additional 7% say they self-identify as both equally.
That’s the percentage of white Protestant evangelicals who say that the Republican Party is friendly to religion — a decline of 14 points in the past year for a constituency that has played a pivotal role in recent elections.
