The number of international migrants grew to 281 million in 2020; 3.6% of the world’s people lived outside their country of birth that year.
International migration from sub-Saharan African countries to Europe and the U.S. has grown over the past decade. Many who live in sub-Saharan Africa say they would move to another country if they could.
Between 2010 and 2016, the number of Muslims living in Germany rose from 3.3 million (4.1% of the population) to nearly 5 million (6.1%), while the rest of the population shrank modestly from 77.1 million to 76.5 million.
Regional conflict and economic opportunity boost number of migrants from 25 million to 54 million.
