A quarter of voting members of the U.S. Congress identify their race or ethnicity as something other than non-Hispanic White.
Today, there are more than 18 million living veterans in the United States, representing about 6% of the country’s adult population.
Only one of this year’s 35 Senate elections didn’t go the same way as the state’s 2020 presidential vote. The exception was Wisconsin.
Here’s a look back at 2023 through some of our most striking research findings.
Overall, 57 Black women – among a total of 106 women of color – have ever been elected to the national legislature.
The new House will have 80 members who’ve served in the military, or 18.4% of members. That’s up from 75, or 17.2%, in the 117th Congress.
Nearly two-thirds of the federal judges President Joe Biden has appointed so far are women, and the same share are members of racial or ethnic minority groups.
Americans view their state and local governments far more positively than the federal government in Washington.
Just 24% say the country’s problems could be better solved if presidents didn’t have to worry about Congress or the courts.
Three-quarters of Americans are familiar with the length of a Supreme Court appointment.
