Thirteen voting members of the 118th Congress identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual – the highest number of openly LGB members in history.
Overall, 57 Black women – among a total of 106 women of color – have ever been elected to the national legislature.
Most Americans say religion’s influence is shrinking, and about half (48%) see conflict between their own religious beliefs and mainstream American culture.
The 118th Congress achieved a variety of demographic milestones when its members took office, though it still remains out of step with the U.S. population.
In Missouri, 51% of all reporters covering the state capitol this year – 26 of 51 – are students.
While there has been a decades-long decline in the Christian share of U.S. adults, 88% of the voting members in the new 118th Congress identify as Christian. That is only a few points lower than their share in the late 1970s.
Republican- and Democratic-led states alike already require hundreds of thousands of citizens to be vaccinated against various diseases.
Trust in scientists and medical scientists has fallen below pre-pandemic levels, with 29% of U.S. adults saying they have a great deal of confidence in medical scientists to act in the best interests of the public. This is down from 40% in November 2020 and 35% in January 2019, before COVID-19 emerged. Other prominent groups – including the military, police officers and public school principals – have also seen their ratings decline.
But they hold differing opinions about what that phrase means, and two-thirds of U.S. adults say churches should keep out of politics.
