75% of U.S. adults say they have read a book in the past 12 months in any format, a figure that has remained largely unchanged since 2011.
The share of Americans who say they are very or somewhat concerned about government use of people’s data has increased from 64% in 2019 to 71% today. Two-thirds (67%) of adults say they understand little to nothing about what companies are doing with their personal data, up from 59%.
Asked to “imagine a better world online,” experts hope for a ubiquitous – even immersive – digital environment that promotes fact-based knowledge, offers better defense of individuals’ rights, empowers diverse voices and provides tools for technology breakthroughs and collaborations to solve the world’s wicked problems.
The vast majority of U.S. adults have heard at least a little about cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ether.
Smartphone ownership and home broadband adoption are up slightly since 2019. And 30% of Americans say they at least sometimes experience problems connecting to the internet at home.
Some Americans – particularly those who are younger or college educated – are finding virtual ways to connect, shop and be active.
Some 15% of all home broadband users in the U.S. say they have had trouble paying for their high-speed internet service during the pandemic.
44% of Americans think major technology companies should be regulated more than they are now, down from 56% in April 2021.
Rural adults are less likely than suburban adults to have home broadband and less likely than urban adults to own a smartphone, tablet or computer.
Social media is an important tool for consumers, with some Americans – particularly younger adults – turning to influencer recommendations.
