Mark Jurkowitz is the associate director at the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. He studies and writes the about the changing news and information ecosystem, focusing on everything from media content analysis to the economics of a news industry in transition. A long-time press writer, Jurkowitz spent 10 years at the Boston Globe, first as the paper’s ombudsman and then as its first full-time media beat reporter. A graduate of the School of Public Communications at Boston University, he also taught media ethics courses at both Northeastern and Tufts University in the Boston area. At the Project for Excellence in Journalism, he has authored studies on presidential campaign coverage and the newspaper industry’s search for new business models and was the lead writer of the weekly News Index Reports which quantified and analyzed the news agenda of the mainstream media. He speaks at media industry seminars, regularly briefs foreign reporters in the U.S. sponsored by the International Center for Journalists and has discussed the project’s work on programs such as the PBS NewsHour, CNN’s Reliable Sources and On the Media from public radio station WNYC.
