Some 66% of registered voters who use the internet—55% of all registered voters—have gone online this election season to watch videos related to the election campaign or political issues.
In our surveys this summer, we added a question about mobile internet connectivity to help us capture internet users who may access the internet on mobile devices.
On the eve of Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone 5, 45% of American adults own smartphones. They are particularly popular with young adults and those living in relatively higher income households; 66% of those ages 18-29 own smartphones, and 68% of those living in households earning $75,000 also own them.
For years, the Pew Internet & American Life Project has been polling people who use social media, asking how they use it and what they get out of it. The results paint an interesting picture of what kind of people use sites such as Facebook, who they are connected to and how they manage their privacy.
While the number of Americans who go online has increased substantially over the years, about one-in-five adults still do not use the internet. About half of non-users don’t go online because they don’t think the internet is relevant to them.
