# Gender Pay Gap Narrows, and Persists

Women overall earn 84% of what men do in median hourly pay, a gap that has narrowed considerably since 1980, when women earned 64% of what men were paid. The narrowing--and persistence--of the gender pay gap are explored in a [new Pew Research Center report](https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2013/12/11/on-pay-gap-millennial-women-near-parity-for-now/), which also includes a survey of attitudes about this issue.
