# Staying Put

A majority of American adults (57%) have not lived outside of the state in which they were born, and 37% have never left their original hometown; at the opposite end of the spectrum, 15% have lived in four or more states. College graduates (40%) are far less likely to live in their birth state than those with a high school education or less (66%). Two-thirds of young adults, ages 18-29, have not lived outside their state of birth, but they also are the most likely to say that they probably will move within five years.
