Say Democrats Unfriendly to Religion

Despite recent electoral defeats, there is one poll in which the GOP retains a sizeable lead over the Democratic Party — the party more friendly toward religion. Close to half of the public (48%) considers the Republican Party as friendly toward religion, while just 29% say the same about the Democratic Party. The Democrats’ rating is down from 2008 when 38% of Americans saw them as friendly to religion.Opinions about the Democratic Party’s friendliness toward religion are lowest among groups already inclined to dislike the party’s politics — such as Republicans and white evangelical Protestants — but views of the Democrats’ friendliness toward religion have declined among nearly all major religious groups.
