The same year (2007) that out-of-wedlock births rose to record levels, a Pew Research survey found that two-thirds of Americans believe unmarried motherhood is harmful to society. Fully 66% said single women having children is a bad thing, significantly more than labeled either gay and lesbian couples raising children (50%) or mothers of young children working (41%) as a bad thing. However while six-in-ten said that unmarried couples having children is a bad thing for society generally, only 44% of Americans say unmarried women having children is always or almost always wrong.
