Nobody took a poll when French citizens stormed the Bastille on July 14, 1789 to see if people approved. But 217 years later, when asked about their views on the massive riots of the past year, just 46% of the general public in France was sympathetic toward the youths from immigrant and working class suburbs who felt frustrated by their place in French society. By contrast, 62% of the British public and 64% of the German public expressed sympathy. There is also a sharp divide in attitudes among Muslims and non-Muslims: 63% of French Muslims were sympathetic as were a majority of Muslims in Germany, Great Britain and Spain. Read More
