The CDC has cautioned Americans to avoid holiday travel this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak. And while it’s not yet clear how many Americans will follow that advice for the upcoming Christmas holiday, more than half say they changed their Thanksgiving plans due to the pandemic, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey.
Overall, a third of U.S. adults say they changed their Thanksgiving plans “a great deal,” with an additional quarter saying they change their plans “some.”
Partisan differences over many aspects of COVID-19 have been apparent since the early days of the outbreak, including on this question. Seven-in-ten Democrats say they changed their Thanksgiving plans a great deal, or some, because of COVID-19, compared with 44% of Republicans.
Democrats and Republicans differ over several other aspects of everyday life amid the outbreak. Eight-in-ten Republicans say they would feel comfortable having a close friend or family member visit inside their home, compared with 52% of Democrats. And while 64% of Republicans say they would feel comfortable eating out in a restaurant, only 27% of Democrats say they would.
