Nation’s Capital: People Magnet

As the new administration and Congress settle in, new job holders as well as job seekers coming to Washington DC will find that the nation’s capital has had lots of practice in welcoming newcomers; fully 63% of adults currently residing in the District of Columbia were not born there, placing it fourth on the list of “magnet states.” A magnet state is a state with a high share of adults born in another state. Nevada tops the list with 86% of its current residents born in another state. Next on the ranking of magnet states are Arizona (72%), Alaska (71%) and Florida (70%). At the opposite end are New York (18.6%), Louisiana (20.1%), Pennsylvania (20.9%) and Michigan (22.2%), each with fewer than a quarter of their current adult residents born in some other state.
